About Anke

I am a PhD candidate in Astronomy at the University of Cape Town, with a strong academic background in Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy. I hold postgraduate qualifications in Astronomy and Astrophysics and have experience teaching, tutoring and mentoring learners and university students.

I tutor Mathematics and Physical Science at high-school level, as well as selected university-level Mathematics and Physics. I can also assist university students with scientific programming, Python, data analysis and related quantitative skills.

My approach to teaching is strongly focused on understanding rather than memorisation. I want students to understand why a method works, how different ideas connect, and how to reason their way through an unfamiliar problem — skills that become increasingly important in senior school and university.

I particularly enjoy working with students who are curious, who feel they have gaps in their understanding, or who know they are capable of more but have not necessarily thrived in a conventional classroom environment.

Alongside tutoring, I am an active researcher in observational astronomy. This means I can bring real scientific experience into my teaching and show students how the Mathematics, Physics and computational skills they learn are actually used beyond the classroom.

My lessons focus on understanding the reasoning behind Mathematics and Physical Science rather than simply memorising procedures and formulae.

I work with each student to identify where their understanding begins to break down. Sometimes a student is struggling with the current topic; at other times, the real difficulty is an earlier concept that was never properly understood. We work through those gaps systematically and then apply the ideas through problems, past-paper questions and unfamiliar examples.

I can help learners who are struggling with their current coursework, preparing for tests and examinations, or wanting to strengthen their foundations. I also enjoy working with students who are already doing well and want to explore Mathematics or Physics beyond the school curriculum.

An important part of my teaching is helping students learn how to approach a problem they have not seen before: What is the question actually asking? What information matters? What principles apply? How can we tell whether an answer is reasonable? I want students to become less dependent on memorised templates and more confident in their own reasoning.

Lessons can therefore be adapted to the student’s needs, from targeted help with a particular topic or upcoming examination to longer-term tuition aimed at building stronger mathematical and scientific understanding.

I primarily teach in English and can also teach in Afrikaans on request.

My standard rate is R350 per hour for individual tuition in Mathematics and Physical Science.

This includes lessons tailored to the student’s current needs, whether that means addressing gaps in foundational knowledge, working through current coursework, preparing for tests and examinations, or extending beyond the curriculum.

I also offer tuition and academic support in selected university-level Mathematics and Physics, as well as scientific Python programming and data analysis. Please contact me to discuss your course and requirements.

Both regular weekly tuition and once-off sessions for a particular topic or problem are welcome.
