About August
I am a senior math major at Willamette University. I have worked as a hearth tutor at my university, where students from any classes up to linear algebra come to receive math help. I have also tutored in an introductory Python programming class. Finally, this coming semester I will be working as a TA for an abstract algebra-based number theory class.

As a tutor, I emphasize deeper understanding over surface-level performance. All too often math classes are taught with the focus on solving problems and passing tests. While both of these things are important for synthesizing knowledge and providing feedback, an undue emphasis on performance detracts from a deeper understanding of mathematics. Teaching for understanding rather than performance allows for greater creativity, and ultimately, performance! It also makes mathematics more enjoyable. I believe that anybody has the ability to understand mathematics. All that is required is a good teacher and a bit of encouragement.
This leads to the specifics of my tutoring style. A typical lesson will involve a dialog between me and the student. They show me problems they are struggling with, and I attempt to figure out where the gap in understanding is. Then I explain it in a variety of ways, often using visuals to show a connection between the algebraic side of things and geometry. If one approach doesn't work, I try another. Once the student seems to be grasping the concept, I then ask them guiding questions until they have solved the problem. In the end, it is they who solve the problem. My job is not to do the problem for them but to remove whatever barriers are keeping them from doing it themself! Along the way, I always find myself noticing connections I had not made before.
I believe that my background as a math student and aspiring mathematician gives me the ability to explain things from a variety of angles. My life consists of breaking down difficult concepts, making connections between things, and proving stuff. More important than my mathematical knowledge is my familiarity with the process of increasing it! I believe that this is the perfect background for math tutoring, for the student must go through exactly the same process.
Finally, my lessons are primarily for high school and early college students. Specifically, I can help with high school algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, proofs and logic, linear algebra, basic abstract algebra, and elementary number theory. My lessons are for anyone desiring to join me in the process of deepening mathematical understanding in any of these areas.
