I really put focus on placing myself in the shoes of the student, I know from experience as a student that one of the problems students have with tutors is that students are assumed to have a good foundation, which in turn leaves and propagates many uncertainties and questions for the student. I like to make sure my students have a good understanding of the topic/problem and make sure they have no uncertainties before moving on to anything new.
