About Heather

Hi, I’m a qualified teacher with a real passion for science, learning and helping students discover that science can be both fascinating and enjoyable.

I have been teaching for four years and hold a BSc (Hons) in Neuroscience & Psychology and a PGCE with Distinction. My background in neuroscience and psychology has given me a particular interest in understanding how we learn, think and interact with the world around us.

One of the things I love most about science is that there is always something new to learn. I’m a big believer that learning never really stops — the more you learn, the more you realise how much there is still to discover! I try to bring this curiosity and enthusiasm into my teaching, encouraging students to ask questions, think for themselves and develop a genuine understanding of the subjects they are studying.

I also have experience supporting students with SEND and understand that every student learns differently. I enjoy adapting my teaching to suit individual needs, whether that means changing the pace, explaining something in a different way, or finding a new approach that helps a difficult concept finally click.

Outside of teaching, I love painting, reading, yoga, netball and swimming. I’m always reading or learning something new, and one of my recent favourite books — and a recommendation from me — is The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli. I found his ideas about time fascinating and a great reminder of just how much there is still to understand about our universe.

I hope to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building their confidence. Ultimately, I want students to leave a lesson not only knowing more, but feeling more curious and confident about what they can learn next.

My approach to Biology tutoring focuses on developing subject knowledge and mastering exam technique. Biology is a subject where students can often understand the content but struggle to translate that knowledge into the precise answers examiners are looking for. My aim is to bridge that gap and help students gain confidence in applying their knowledge to exam questions.

Lessons are tailored to each student's individual needs, with a strong emphasis on AQA GCSE Biology. We will work through exam-style questions, explore command words, identify common mistakes and practise using scientific terminology accurately. A particular focus will be on structuring six-mark extended-response questions, helping students organise their ideas, include relevant detail and construct clear, well-developed answers that meet the mark scheme requirements.
