About Nicholas
I am a PhD in molecular genetics and love to teach. I have been giving biology lessons for 5 years, and have tutored 8 students. I typically teach University Bachelor's or Master's degree students, but I am more than happy to help with GCSE or A levels too. All of my students have achieved their goals, if not more (2:1 Hons if not 1st Hons degrees at university).
I teach biology, all the way down to individual topics such as genetics, immunology, cellular biology, and any other biology related fields. I also teach GCSE and A level Maths and Chemistry. I have worked in a genetics research lab, and have a lot of practical experience in biological sciences. As someone who has completed a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and PhD, I understand how daunting some of the topics can be, and I have the first hand experience to help guide you through it all. I normally tutor university students (undergraduates or postgraduates) in biology, and can inform on topics across all years and courses. My teaching method is very interactive and I like to work with students to determine what they are having trouble with. I have a relaxed teaching style, and think it is more important to take your time to understand something, instead of rushing through topics as in some teaching environments.
I start by asking what students are feeling stuck on, and what they want to achieve in their tutoring session. Depending on the student’s level I normally ask to see their syllabus, as what is expected of them will vary quite a bit at different levels of education.
Normally students might have a few areas they are confused about which we can tackle right away. If further issues arise later on, they can come to me and trouble-shoot any hard topics or lectures.
If students are struggling with a subject or topic as a whole, I am happy to go over the fundamentals and help them get a better understanding for the topic. This will normally be similar to a lecture, but I encourage students to ask me any questions if they don’t understand a concept. Then, later down the line if there are additional concepts they are struggling with I can help them work through these.
I am also happy to review essays, dissertations, and theses to help improve writing style and suggest additional points, before they hand in their work for grading.
