About Kate
My name is Kate and I have spent my career in and out of academia because I love learning. I have degrees in maths, data science and AI, plus many years of neurodivergent lived experience.
My teaching experience ranges from tutoring National 5 to university lecturing to delivering commercial workshops - most of my students have been people who are quite anxious about maths or have avoided it for a long time.
I can provide basic disclosure checks for Scotland, England and Wales - this includes an identity check and shows I have no criminal or police record. In my “day job” I work in data science as a specialist in applied AI (machine learning). I also love sewing, crafting and getting out in nature.

I adapt my approach to each student according to their learning styles and needs and am very neurodivergent friendly. My priorities are to build confidence and reduce anxiety to help make learning a positive experience.
I have many years of lived experience with neurodivergence (ADHD/ASD) and have successfully navigated three degrees (BSc, MSc and PhD) since I left school. This means I have a lot of experience trying to make my own learning neurodivergent friendly - not all techniques work for everyone, so I have a long list of things that didn’t work for me, but might work for you!
Each lesson is typically 1 hour with a quick break at halfway. I offer a free initial meeting where we can get to know each other and make sure we’re both confident we’ll make a good team. I like to use visual aids and provide interesting real-life examples to help make confusing concepts more accessible (and hopefully enjoyable). I also like to show how different concepts link together and try to present maths as a way of thinking instead of intimidating formulae. Beyond study skills and helping students figure out how they learn best, I also like to spend time on exam technique, especially for anxious students as this can be half the challenge!
I am happy to accept students of age 13+, including adults of any age, for the following levels:
- National 4
- National 5
- Higher
- Advanced Higher
- University levels 1 and 2

TRAVEL
I am very happy to travel to a location that is convenient for you. My charge for travelling is 30p per mile, from my home to the destination. E.g. I am 16 miles from Dundee which would be £4.80 (30p x 16).
SPACE
If you would like me to find and book a dedicated space for our lesson, I am happy to do so - if the venue requires a booking fee, this would be agreed upon in advance and paid for by the client.
BLOCK BOOKING
When block booking, or paying in advance, I offer a discount of 30 mins per 5hrs.
