Gabrielle and I have worked together in many settings over the years. The time we spent tutoring at Spelman College was probably the most memorable for me. Shadowing her Chemistry tutoring sessions helped me understand the methods and tools required to explain scientific subjects to a range of learners with diverse backgrounds. Her approach to helping students solve a problem or understand a topic involved conversing rather than lecturing. The conversations helped students develop ideas organically and allowed them to eventually solve problems not just accurately but independently. With Gabrielle’s pedagogy, classically difficult units like stoichiometry and thermodynamics became tangible. I adopted this method in my tutoring sessions after understanding how effective it was for her students and cementing their knowledge of course topics. Overall, Gabrielle’s ability to trace knowledge gaps and guide students to understand topics of vast rigors is what makes her an ideal and successful tutor.
