About Ken

Hi, I'm Ken!

I'm 47 years old Karate Black Belt and have been involved in martial arts for many years, with experience in karate, free sparring, competition training and practical self-defense.

PLEASE WATCH INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PROFILE TO GET AN IDEA!

My passion is **Jiyū Kumite — the art of free sparring**, particularly the strategy, timing and decision-making that make techniques effective against a moving opponent.

My approach combines traditional karate striking principles with practical kumite strategies, drawing on different approaches to fighting distance, interception, evasive movement and counterattacking.

I believe there's a big difference between knowing how to perform a punch or kick and knowing when, why and how to use it effectively.

That's where I like to focus my teaching.

I particularly enjoy breaking down the strategy behind techniques, explaining how to read an opponent's movements, recognize openings, control distance and use timing and positioning to your advantage.

My lessons are not centered on kata or formal routines. Instead, I focus on the practical application of karate through free-sparring skills, competition strategy and self-defense.

I also believe good karate isn't simply about being the fastest or strongest person in the dojo. It's about understanding your opponent, recognizing opportunities, staying composed and learning to use your skills intelligently.

**My teaching style**

I'm a patient, approachable instructor who enjoys explaining the details behind techniques.

I don't believe in simply showing a movement and expecting students to copy it. I want students to understand the principles involved and develop the ability to make their own decisions during sparring.

Lessons are tailored to your experience, physical abilities and individual goals, with controlled drills and progressive resistance introduced as your skills develop.

Whether you're a complete beginner, a karate student wanting to improve your kumite, or someone interested in developing practical striking and self-defense skills, I'd be happy to help.

**My goal is to help you become a more confident, technically capable and tactically intelligent karate practitioner.**

I look forward to training with you!

# Karate Jiyū Kumite — Competition Strategy & Practical Self-Defense

**Learn how to apply karate, not just perform techniques.**

My private lessons specialize in free sparring (Jiyū Kumite), counterattacking, competition strategy and practical self-defense.

Rather than concentrating on kata, I teach students how to use karate techniques against moving opponents through timing, distance management, balance, movement and tactical decision-making.

# What you'll learn

- **Kumite strategy:** Learn how to read an opponent, recognize their habits, create scoring opportunities and choose effective attacking or counterattacking strategies.
- **Timing and distance (Maai):** Understand when to attack, when to counter and how to control the distance between yourself and your opponent.
- **Interception:** Learn how to interrupt an opponent's attack using direct techniques, including front kicks and counterpunches.
- **Evasion and angles (Tai Sabaki):** Develop movement that takes you away from an opponent's attacking line while creating opportunities to counter.
- **Counterattacking:** Learn how to recognize committed attacks and respond using effective punches, kicks and combinations.
- **Competition preparation:** Develop tactical strategies for point fighting and other kumite formats, adapted to the applicable competition rules.
- **Practical self-defense:** Explore how the principles of karate striking, positioning and distance management can support personal safety, disengagement and escape.
- **Progressive sparring drills:** Build confidence through structured partner exercises, gradually introducing timing, movement, unpredictability and controlled resistance.

# My approach

I place particular emphasis on understanding the *why* behind techniques.

For example, rather than simply teaching a front kick, I may explain how it can intercept a developing roundhouse kick, disrupt an opponent's balance and create an opportunity for an immediate counterattack.

I encourage students to understand the situation, recognize the appropriate response and learn how to adapt if their opponent reacts differently.

Lessons progress at a pace suited to your abilities, with an emphasis on technical understanding, safety and developing practical confidence.

# Who are the lessons for?

**Beginners:** Learn the foundations of stance, footwork, distance, striking and basic sparring strategy.

**Existing karate students:** Improve your ability to apply techniques during free sparring, develop counterattacking strategies and become more confident against moving opponents.

**Competition-minded students:** Work on timing, distance, tactical decision-making and scoring opportunities appropriate to your chosen ruleset.

**Adults interested in self-defense:** Learn practical striking, awareness, evasion and disengagement skills without needing to pursue competition.

No kata training is required.

**Lesson duration:** 60 minutes, personalized to your experience and goals.
