About Deb

Hello! I am Debismita. I’m a passionate Science and Math teacher currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from University College Cork after completing an undergraduate in Chemical Engineering with a 4.0. I've been teaching for about 5 years now, and have a 100% pass record. Every student of mine, no matter how new to the subject, has scored more than 50% in the subject. I work hard to make sure that you get your desired result in the exam! :)

I love an in-depth style of teaching where no question is too obvious to ask! I specialize in college-level math, physics, and chemistry classes, and have also taught Junior and Leaving Cert Math, Physics, and Chemistry for the past 5 years. I also teach students with Asperger's, Down Syndrome, and on the autism spectrum, and encourage them to communicate their specific needs. I am accessible to my students every hour of the day for doubts/queries for no extra fee. I have lasting relationships with my lovely students—many of whom have gone on to do very well in and beyond their exams!

Please note: College classes are €47/hr since I spend a long time to prepare your class. I do not do free classes for college students since it takes a long time to study and make advanced practice questions so that I can give my best to you.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My mother was a teacher all her life, and seeing the satisfaction that
teaching brought her made me want to try it too. I absolutely love it, and
there is nothing like witnessing the progress of someone first hand.

Schools and universities tend to not be very inclusive for students with
learning disabilities, so I find that private tutoring is a great way to
level the field for them- since, just with a little support they are able
to learn just as well (if not better) than most kids.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have always been interested in science- physics, chemistry and maths.
This is why I chose to go to college for chemical engineering. Because I
love science subjects so much, I am able to teach them with enthusiasm and
passion- something I have noticed is infectious in the classroom :)
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role model is my mother, who was an incredible teacher and human being
throughout her life. She not only taught me English literature, but showed
me valuable lessons in self-learning which come in handy when I have to
teach myself something (which as an academic and a researcher happens very
    often)
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The most important quality you need to be a good tutor is investment in the
students future. If the students sense any apathy from the tutor, they are
less likely to be engaged and ask important questions during class. It is
hence important to ensure that you are just as invested in the outcome as
your students, if not more. And this investment only comes when you are
extremely passionate about teaching that subject.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I used to love asking questions in class but as I grew older, it was discouraged by my teachers as it would eat into the class hours, or might be deemed an ‘obvious question’. It was only when a physics teacher of mine encouraged me by telling me that there are no obvious questions in science that I started to ask more and more important questions that made me learn a very unique skill - how to ask good questions. As a scientist, it is a very valuable skill and I try to pass it on to my students too.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The main challenge of teaching maths is the constant need for practice- as
this depends on the students to find time and solve questions. The only way
out of it is to make the student truly interested in the subject- where
homework does not seem like a chore. While it takes time to reach there,
this is an invaluable change in the student’s experience with learning the
subject. This stays with them their whole life, which turns the subject
from one of fear to one of enjoyment and curiosity. A lot of my students
hated maths and science when they started classes with me. However, today
many of them are majoring in engineering- which is a testament to how much
a good tutor can affect your perception of a subject.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have many passions- teaching being the most prominent of them because it allows me to not only engage with the subjects I love on a daily basis, but also helps me stay curious through my students and their creative questions. I am also very passionate about research and discovery of new scientific knowledge.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

My work speaks for itself and my students have a 100% pass record. My passion and investment in their future has helped propel their careers into new heights and I couldn’t be more elated. That’s what being a Superprof is all about.
