About Gretchen

My name is Gretchen Klein, and I am a certified teacher of Suzuki Method piano. . I specialize in young children, starting at age 4. I am certified to teach piano up to Suzuki Book 7. I also have a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University, and a Masters Degree in Vocal Pedagogy from Holy Names University. As a member of the Grammy Award winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus for 28 years, I have performed and recorded extensively with the SFS in Davies Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, and other venues.

I love working with children. I create a safe and positive environment so a child's first experience with piano shapes their life long journey with music.

I also teach beginning Adult piano lessons.

I've been teaching for many years.  I started teaching voice and piano while working on my Masters degree at Holy Names College.  I graduated in 2002.  My husband also encouraged me to teach from home.  He is Stephen Paulson Principal Bassoon with the San Francisco Symphony.

I have a Masters in Vocal Pedagogy from Holy Names College in Oakland.  I am certified to teach up to book 7 in Suzuki from Holy Names College.  I have a K-12 Multiple Teaching Credential.  Also a BA in Dance Choreography.

I like to know if they have studied and what books they have worked out of.  If they have been studying, I ask them to play me something and and access their learning.

If they are a new student ages 4 and up.  I start with the Suzuki Method.  I provide the book.   We start with watching and listening.  I also do rhythms walking around and go to a chalk board and write out some simple rythms. Ta ti ti ta. With the younger students I introduce them to the black and white keys.  I also work out of mini books for reading.

With older students, if they have studied I will work with their books and include some Suzuki training.  If they are older than 8 I will still teach Suzuki but also bring in a reading book.  Fabers and mini books.

Age 4 to adult.  Beginners to intermediate.  All kinds of learning disablities.

Check them out to see if the teacher is a match.  Make sure you enjoyed the lesson and felt encouraged, suported, and inspired.  Trust your instincts.

Teaching my neighbor Kieran.  He came over to our house and was drawn to the piano immediately.  Thus, began his first lesson.  He comes over every Monday night and I can hear him playing next door.
