About Alis
Alis An, a Canadian pianist and PhD candidate at the Royal College of Music, is pursuing her research under the guidance of Christina Guillaumier and Danny Driver, supported by an RCM Studentship. Alis' concerts have taken her across Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and the UK; recent highlights include an appearance as the soloist for Chopin’s Concerto No. 1 with the Orchestra dell’Università di Milano-Bicocca, in Autumn 2023, at Villa Olmo. Her performing experience, which extends to non-traditional repertoire, led her to collaborate with groups such as London-based contemporary music ensemble Cat’s Cradle Collective. Additionally, her performances for contemporary music initiative 900presente’s productions, including Bruno Maderna's Don Perlimplin (2020) and Philippe Manoury’s Hypothèses du sextuor (2022), were broadcast on Radiotelevisione Svizzera.
Her doctoral research critiques contemporary methods of piano technique pedagogy, which looks to technical perfection as a model but lacks the vocabulary to coherently articulate the process by which technical perfection is achieved. Drawing on her own artistic practice, historical pedagogical texts, and interdisciplinary tools such as movement theories, Alis proposes a reframing of technique grounded in phonomotor connection—the link between sound and movement. Her work aims to offer a coherent and embodied framework for piano technique, addressing widespread dissatisfaction with existing approaches and challenging institutional assumptions about what it means to be technically “complete.”
Alis has received generous support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Ranald and Vera Shean Memorial Foundation, the Winspear Fund, and the Anne Burrows Music Foundation. Her accolades include the ’19/‘20 Pauline Hartley Award at the Royal College of Music, recognition at international competitions like the Premio E. Tschaikowsky, the Tadini International Music Competition, the Montecatini International Piano Competition, the Canadian Music Competition, and the International Music Competition Paris. Her mentors included William Grant Naboré, Natalia Trull, Sofya Gulyak, Nigel Clayton, Dmitri Alexeev, Gordon Fergus-Thompson, and more.

In my piano teaching practice, I believe that students should receive a well-rounded education. Each lesson should encompass various aspects of music, enabling students to make tangible progress, overcome challenges, and strive for higher artistic ideals. My primary objective is to assist students in establishing a strong foundation in musicianship and technique, nurturing their appreciation for classical music, and cultivating self-awareness, taste, and discipline. Through studying with me, students will acquire independent learning skills and see concrete results.
Having been fortunate enough to study under exceptional pedagogues worldwide, I understand the significance of both helpful and unhelpful teaching experiences. I am passionate about piano pedagogy and approach teaching with great seriousness. I empathise with my students and can relate to them, and I communicate with honesty and sincerity. I am committed to continuously improving my understanding of their musical needs.
My piano lessons are best suited for students who possess a strong drive and a genuine interest in music. Designed for individuals committed to a regular weekly schedule and consistent practice, my instruction fosters growth through dedicated effort. I teach students of all ages, spanning beginners to those pursuing performers' diplomas. With experience teaching at the conservatoire standard, I welcome advanced students with similar aspirations. If you seek a rewarding learning experience that nurtures musical development through commitment and hard work, my lessons provide the perfect platform for your journey.
Lastly, I strongly believe that no amount of lessons can replace a single performance opportunity. This is why I offer my students two student concerts per year - one before the summer break, and another before Christmas, organised at my own expense. Participation is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged.

Perfect! Alis is a fantastic teacher, the perfect mix of friendliness and professionalism. Lessons don't feel formal at all, yet she makes sure to take your improvement seriously. She also clearly genuinely cares about the piano which always matters hugely. The part that truly makes the difference for me is that she leaves you with something to take home and improve upon. I've previously (with other teachers) enjoyed lessons but felt lost with practice once I leave the session, but not here. There's something to work on each lesson and once that is cemented you continue your journey. Unfortunately due to personal life changes, I had to end lessons with her, but as soon as I'm able to get the time to I will be returning to her no doubt. I couldn't recommend Alis more!
- I really enjoyed teaching Mischa. He’s detail-oriented and always happy to receive corrections and minor adjustments. He’s a very easy student to work with. I hope he will continue with the piano for a long time!Alis's response :
Perfect! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with Alis. She is an exceptional teacher — observant, insightful, and genuinely invested in her students’ progress. She has a real talent for pinpointing areas for improvement and offering clear, practical guidance to address them. Her patience and encouragement make every lesson a pleasure, and I look forward to continuing to learn from her as I grow in my playing and deepen my enjoyment of music.
- I really enjoy teaching Christie.Alis's response :
She is playing at a good advanced level with good scales and sight reading so she gave me a good foundation to work with. I’m looking forward to working with her on a variety of styles and pieces and seeing how she progresses. Thank you for being my student, Christie!
Perfect! I am so very grateful to have Alis as my daughter's piano teacher. It was unusual coming from a non ABRSM background, but Alis was able to help us in the direction and level we want to achieve. She has very good attitude as a teacher and has great teaching methods for aspiring pianist of any background! Alis is skilful, professional, simply a wonderful teacher to have for my child. My daughter enjoys her lesson very much and will be taking Grade 8 exam next year. Thank you very much Alis!
- I really enjoy working with Gwen-Sofia. She is really receptive to my instruction and advice. She always approaches piano with a critical mind - tries something and then realises it sounds better, and then does whatever is necessary to achieve it. She is also tolerant of some of the more frustrating methods I use to help my students (like counting out loud and practicing slowly...) and I'm awfully grateful for her trust! She will go far if she continues like this. It's always a joy to teach students like Gwen who genuinely want to improve and push themselves to be better.Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis has been a fantastic piano tutor. I've been a student with Alis for about 6 months as an adult beginner. Having never played an instrument before, I've found Alis' approach works really well and is yielding results. Her lessons are enjoyable yet challenging and cover a wide range of musical topics, including theory, stylistic choices and effective technique. I had a lot of doubts about how much progress I could make as an adult beginner but Alis is patient and reassuring whilst still pushing for a high standard. All in all I would thoroughly recommend Alis for new or returning pianists.
- Sam has been a pleasure to teach so far. He has been studying with me since end October, and has been very much consistent with practice, as well as taking my teaching to heart. Every week he comes to lesson with the intention to work on specific things, and this attitude combined with his open-mindedness, receptiveness, and appreciation of detail, I think makes it very enjoyable to work together for the both of us. I would recommend him to temper his high expectations / demands on himself with patience, as learning the piano is a long road with its up and downs. He is doing very well and not "late" for anything, so I would tell him to just enjoy the process as much you can, and celebrate and enjoy all of your achievements which are already significant.Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis is an excellent teacher that explains concepts well and is able to go over material no matter the diffculty level. She makes learning the piano an enjoyable and interesting experience
- Eeshaan is very attentive to detail and receptive to my constructive criticism. He's improved very much and in a fast pace since we've started lessons - and has already gained some independence as a beginner. He always does his homework which I appreciate. I'm excited to see how he continues and how he will play in a year from now, and I hope he doesn't give up when it gets tough!Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis is a wonderfully thoughtful and detailed tutor who has numerous ways to improve piano technique by slowing down practice. She also focusses on precision, hand positioning and finger pressure in a way I have not seen before. I find her personable, conscientious and kind whilst maintaining and encouraging standards of self discipline and consistent application.
- I very much enjoy my lessons with Nathan. He is already a very advanced pianist but came to me to further refine technique. I've found that he is very receptive to my suggestions and constructive criticism. Some of the things I ask of him are quite demanding; I make him play in slow motion, to enable him to analyse physical movements and consequently to introduce some changes. Because Nathan is so observant, he is able to achieve this and also make note of when he does things incorrectly. This is impressive and I would encourage him not to be frustrated with this kind of slow work - it is very valuable, but patience and consistency is key. I encourage him to dedicate at least 10 minutes daily to this kind of focused movement analysis (not more, that would drive anyone crazy) before moving on to other tasks / other pieces in the same practice session. If he patiently maintains this consistent and disciplined approach, he will undoubtedly go far.Alis's response :
As a person, Nathan is considerate, thoughtful, and responsible - he understands that I juggle various activities as a professional musician and so has very helpfully scheduled lessons with me a few months in advance, and is very consistent with his attendance. Very happy to have you as a student Nathan, and I hope that we will continue to work well together.
Perfect! I recently returned to playing the piano regularly after a long pause, and for a couple of years I played without a teacher. I played pieces I enjoyed listening to as best I could, but eventually felt that I had hit a barrier and didn't know how to progress. I wanted to find a teacher with high expectations who would help me develop. Alis has certainly met these requirements. My lessons with Alis are engaging and have exposed me to ideas about technique and practising that I could never have imagined. I now have a more structured practising routine and new ways of thinking about how I play which make playing much more interesting. This has revived my piano playing and my interest in music more generally.
- I very much enjoy teaching an advanced student like Daniel, who is receptive to my constructive criticism, enthusiastic about classical music, and works in a way that seems quite consistent. He will go far if he keeps up with what I've suggested - working closer with the text, slowing down the practice, having a routine that includes some technical warm-up exercises as well as sight-reading, and a smaller rotation of pieces (in order so that we can go through a wide repertoire more efficiently).Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis is an outstanding piano teacher! Their patience and clear instruction made learning easy and enjoyable. I've made great progress in a such short time, and every lesson feels motivating. Highly recommend!
- Piyush has been studying with me since September. I find that it is more challenging sometimes to teach students who come to me every two weeks, because they will have gone for a longer period of time exacerbating their bad habits without correction. However Piyush pays close attention to my recommendations and has been very receptive so far. He just had his fourth lesson and he's already able to sight-read initial-level pieces in a reasonable tempo, without stopping - with the right notes, right rhythm, counting, good articulation, good physical movements. He doesn't have to be frustrated or hard on himself because he is doing well - just have to trust the process. He is also a very gentle person. I enjoy teaching him very much.Alis's response :
Perfect! After years learning the piano with the same teacher, Alis was the perfect tutor to begin a new chapter with. Each lesson I felt challenged in a way that made always made me look forward to the next week, and I discovered so many new interesting ways of working on my technique. Alis always asked me what my objectives were so we could figure out a plan for the weeks ahead. I will miss learning with her!
- Lisa is such a lovely, kind, considerate, empathetic and responsible person and I’m really enjoying teaching her. She is very appreciative of the things I tell her to do- even the difficult things, but she recognises and hears the difference it makes on her playing and her face lights up. It is a joy to teach someone who loves the piano so much.Alis's response :
Perfect! She is an amazing teacher! Very professional and friendly at the same time! I warmly recommend her!
- I really enjoyed the first lesson with Andrea, he is kind and serious about the piano, and tries to change immediately the things I say to change. He has a receptive and generous spirit. I'm looking forward to supporting him in preparing for his LRSM exam.Alis's response :
Perfect! First lesson after 20 years, I can’t wait for the next one. Alis seems to be the sweetest and the most efficient teacher
- Maeva's enthusiasm about the piano is really infectious and I've really enjoyed teaching her for the first time. I'm super excited to be a part of her journey in becoming musically fluent and I'm looking forward to supporting her in any way I can in her goals.Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis is a fantastic teacher and I'd recommend her to any potential student!
While I'm sure that Alis is a wonderful teacher for any age group and skill level (as she's clearly an incredibly gifted pianist), I've experienced that she's particularly excellent from my perspective as an adult beginner.
She's not shy to push and help install a sense of discipline, which has helped immensely with long term motivation to continue improving. She strikes a perfect balance in splitting focus between actually playing, while also teaching the theory and fundamentals to ensure long term growth.
I've approached this experience with a lot of ambition, but throughout the process Alis has always left me feeling that my long term goals are achievable. A couple of months in and I'm already feeling a very tangible improvement and a lot of optimism for this journey.
On a more practical level, Alis is also very organised in terms of having a great set-up for remote learning. I was concerned going into this that it wouldn't replicate the experience of in-person lessons, but Alis is clearly very experienced in teaching this way, and the lesson experience is great.- Oliver is a very bright student who could go far if he puts his mind to it. I really appreciate that he is so ambitious and has the work ethic to match. One thing that he can improve on is to be kinder to himself :-) and not be so self-derogatory because he is doing better than he imagines.Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis has been a great help to me, her willingness to embrace the music that I choose and help me get it to a better place is invaluable.
- Stephen did a wonderful job teaching himself, and it’s great to see such passion for music. He is really receptive to my ideas and advice and manages to act on these right away. It would be my pleasure to continue teaching him.Alis's response :
Excellent! excellent teaching skills and help in depth to pass exams.
friendly and keep the child's attention engaged. Alis is a very good teacher and highly recommended- Justin is a very curious boy who seems to enjoy piano. It will largely benefit him to incorporate sight reading as part of his daily practice routine.Alis's response :
Perfect! A thoughtful, patient, and highly skilled teacher.
- Thank you for your kind comment, Sam. I really enjoyed teaching Violeta and Carolina, they are such sweet girls. They have a lot of curiosity and desire to get things right and this is such a great quality - they will go far if they keep at it. Looking forward to teaching them weekly.Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis is such a lovely girl full of passion and very patient .Thank you for being such an amazing person.I highly recommented Alis to be your piano tutor.
- Bohan is a very good kid, who is receptive to my ideas and proposals and responsive even when I ask him to do something unexpected or uncomfortable. He was attentive during the whole lesson which is a very good quality. I look forward to developing a good teacher-student relationship, for him to feel more relaxed during lesson, and to help him build a solid foundation in piano playing in all areas of musicianship.Alis's response :
Perfect! Alis is a great teacher, she always motivates me to do better and try harder pieces, and has great suggestions on how to take a piece from good to great. She knows when to encourage me and when to scold me because I'm ignoring things like slurs She can also speak a bit of Italian, which is useful to understand dynamics. See you on the next lesson Alis!
- Veronica, you did very well by yourself this whole time without a teacher and I am very impressed by your independence and dedication. You even use the metronome willingly, which is rare for students. I would be happy to continue building for you a solid foundation for piano playing- if you keep it up, you will go far.Alis's response :

We are so happy to have found Alis. She is an excellent piano teacher: thorough about her work and has great communication skills. As a beginner, she makes lessons interesting and informative, giving different techniques and analogies to master skills. My 14 year old daughter looks forward to her lessons each week. Alis has also helped my daughter massively with grade 5 music theory. Her expertise is evident, and she is truly the best teacher you could ask for.
Alis is a talent, very professional pianist. I have had a quiet a few times to see her video classes even I have missed the chances to attend her class in person. She is always patient to present detailed to us how to improve playing technics. I have learned a lot from her, so glad we have seen her around in her spare time this year again. Much appreciated Alis!
I have been following the piano class with Alis as the main teacher for one and a half year. There are 50 to 60 students in our piano class, which includes students of all levels. The way of learning is mainly based on online teaching.
Alis is very professional and knowledgeable with love and enthusiasm. Whether it is the basic theory of piano performance or the specific fingering method, Alis’s teaching is very thorough and easy to understand. Through her teaching, I can quickly find problems in my performance and solve them in time. Every time I listen to her class, I have gained a lot. In the last class of more than three hours yesterday, it was very interesting and I didn’t want to miss one word of her instructions. Through one and a half year of study, I have learned the basic playing skills and become more and more interested in playing piano.
