About Sam
Most students don’t struggle with all of math, just a few missing links that quietly derail everything else.
Those small gaps (fractions, equations, functions, geometry ideas, and core calculus skills) become big headaches: slow homework, shaky quizzes, and test anxiety that turns tiny mistakes into lost points.
If gaps linger, confidence dips while class keeps moving. Parents try “more practice,” students feel more pressure, and a capable learner starts to think they’re “not a math person.”
I rebuild understanding from the exact point of confusion outward: targeted diagnostics, clear micro-lessons, guided practice, and simple routines for home. Students leave each session knowing what to do, why it works, and how to repeat it on their own.
WHAT I’LL DO (THAT MOST TUTORS DON’T),
My approach goes beyond homework help to create repeatable success. I work on high-leverage skills and routines that many standard tutors miss:
• Targeted Diagnostic: A low-stress check to quickly pinpoint the exact foundational skills blocking progress, ensuring every minute of tutoring is productive.
• Correction cycle: An efficient method to turn "careless errors" into points regained on future quizzes and tests.
• Structured Test Routines: Techniques like "First-Pass/Second-Pass" to manage time, accuracy, and anxiety during quizzes, midterms, and finals.
• Pattern Recognition: Training the student's eye to spot the handful of core mathematical forms that appear across seemingly different problems.

READY TO MAKE MATH FEEL CLEAR AND WINNABLE?
Message or call me ((concealed information)) with the student’s level (middle, high school, or college), course, and current challenges. I’ll reply as soon as possible. Limited weekly spots to keep quality high.
My journey began during my PhD studies, where I had the opportunity to teach and TA advanced math courses. I realized that many students, even those at the university level, were held back by fundamental gaps from middle and high school.
This realization shifted my focus from pure theory to effective instruction. I found a passion for translating complex mathematical concepts into clear, actionable steps for students of all ages. Over the last 20+ years, I've refined this approach into the structured, diagnostic-based tutoring methods you see in my profile, ensuring students not only learn math but also build lasting confidence.
I hold a "PhD in Electrical Engineering, giving me deep expertise across all levels of math, from Pre-Algebra through advanced College Calculus and Differential Equations.
My training includes over "20 years of experience" actively teaching and tutoring students from middle school through the university level. This real-world experience has led me to develop effective methods that focus specifically on diagnosing and repairing the most common student gaps efficiently.
This combination of advanced academic training and extensive practical experience ensures the student receives instruction that is both technically correct and strategically effective for improving grades.

My typical process starts with a "Free 10-minute phone consult" to understand the student's needs, course, and pace.
Once we start, I use a quick, "targeted diagnostic" to immediately pinpoint the specific "missing links" that are blocking their progress. We then move straight to "rebuilding understanding". The most effective materials are the student's most recent homework and quiz questions, ensuring our focus is always 100% relevant to the next test.
The high-level goal is simple: ensure the student leaves every session knowing "what to do, why it works, and how to repeat it" on their own, leading to measurable grade improvement.
My 20+ years of experience has allowed me to work with a very wide range of learners, from students who are severely struggling to those looking for advanced placement. I organize them into three main groups:
Middle and High School Students: This is the most common group, often including students who are capable but lack confidence due to missing fundamental skills (the "missing links"). They typically range from those looking to turn a C or D grade into a B or A in courses like Pre-Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus AB.
College Students: I frequently work with undergraduates in Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, and Statistics. These students are often preparing for engineering or scientific degrees and need help translating theoretical concepts into structured problem-solving.
Returning/Non-Traditional Learners: I enjoy helping adults returning to school who need a math refresher to pass a required course, such as Introductory Statistics, to finish their degree.
Essentially, I work with anyone looking to replace slow, frustrating guesswork with a clear, repeatable plan that leads to better grades and confidence.
I would offer three key points to ensure they hire an effective math tutor:
Demand a Plan, Not Just Homework Help: Ask the tutor how they will diagnose the specific gaps, the missing links, before starting any lesson. If they can't clearly explain a targeted diagnostic process, you might just be getting more practice thrown at the problem.
Ensure Mistakes Are Used: A good tutor should be able to show you how they systematically use your old quizzes and tests to turn previous errors into correct answers on the next exam.
Prioritize Deep Expertise: Look for a tutor with advanced knowledge (like a PhD across all math levels). This ensures they not only fix the current problem but understand how today's skills connect to next year's courses, providing long-term stability.
A recent event I am genuinely fond of involved an 8th-grade Pre-Algebra student who was struggling with low self-belief. His grade was a C-, and the confusion around concepts like linear functions was making him feel like he just wasn't "a math person."
The breakthrough didn't come from a fancy new worksheet. It came from few focused weeks where we systematically identified and closed his few missing links concerning slopes and equations. The moment that stands out is when he realized the "difficult" test questions were just variations of the core pattern we practiced.
He finished the semester with a B+ (89%). His confidence soared, and his mom told me he started organizing his binder without being asked. It's rewarding to see the grade climb, but seeing a student take ownership of their learning is the best part of this work.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Here are three key questions students should reflect on before reaching out:
"What is the actual problem, and what is the desired result?"
The Problem: Is the issue understanding (e.g., "I don't know how to factor"), speed ("I run out of time on tests"), or confidence ("I panic as soon as the quiz starts")? Knowing this helps us target the root cause immediately.
The Result: Is the goal to pass the class, turn a C into an A, or master a skill for the next course?
"What is the evidence of my struggle?"
The best evidence isn't feelings; it's data. Students should gather their three most recent quizzes or tests (even if they were bad) and identify the specific questions or concepts where they consistently lost points. This immediately allows the teacher to apply the diagnostic approach and skip over material the student already knows.
"When is the pressure point?"
The most important dates are upcoming unit tests or midterms. Knowing the schedule, and the chapters that will be covered, allows the tutor to build a strategic plan that focuses on improving the next score, not just fixing last month's homework.

Perfect! Before working with Sam, my son was really stuck in Algebra II, homework was frustrating, tests were stressful, and his confidence was pretty low. Sam quickly figured out where things were breaking down and explained it in a way that actually clicked. Instead of just grinding through problems, he showed him how to spot patterns and avoid the small mistakes that were costing him points. After just a few sessions, everything changed, he felt calmer, worked faster, and aced his Algebra II test. Sam didn’t just help him with one class; he helped him believe he could do math again.

Sam is a patient, honest and very knowledgeable tutor. He has helped my daughter excel in math and gain back her confidence. Thank you
Sam is very patient and explains very clearly. My son didn’t use to be great at Math. His grades were mostly C’s with very occasional B’s. He was very frustrated at school and had hard time to understand the concept.
We hired Sam last summer to work with my son on an ongoing basis, once or twice a week. He is in 9th grade now and after few months of working with Sam, his grades are currently solid A’s. His confidence has improved drastically, and Math is not a painful subject for him anymore. It’s such a relief for us not to have to worry about his grades as we know he is in good hands. We are very grateful and highly recommend Sam.
Sam did a fantastic job helping my daughter with her Math. He improved her grade by two levels. Sam is very experienced and knowledgeable and can break down any difficult math concept into easier steps. Highly recommended.
