About Joy

After leaving the classroom as a math specialist, I have been tutoring math students for 20 years, mostly as a volunteer at local Elementary, Middle and High Schools. I am currently focusing solely on Middle School, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Integrated Math 1.

My goal, for every student that I tutor, is to provide complete understanding of the math process, assessment of all areas of confusion that are a byproduct of years of misperception, misunderstanding, and poor teaching. I hope all students will be able to come to feel comfortable with math through a thorough understanding of math concepts. I work with students to develop the language needed to specifically understand math’s unique vocabulary. I teach for complete mastery of the questions students have concerning fractions, decimals, variables, algebraic multiplication and division, and much more. I will not just give students formulas and proceeders for them to follow but provide the reasoning behind the processes to answer the question, “ Why does this work?”

I believe every student can understand math, overcome math anxiety and learn how much fun and satisfaction there is in confidently working on, solving and truly understanding how math actually works.

I have a BA for Single Subject, Middle School Math, teaching credential from Western Governors University.

I am a certified Montessori teacher and taught preschool and primary students for 15 years.

I have volunteered at local elementary and middle schools within the past 10 years.

I have had high school and beginning college tutoring clients, that I have worked one with on one, over the past 17 years.

I love math and enjoy helping others discover how much fun math can be. I really enjoy when students have an ah-ha! moment and they know they have overcome a hurdle of math comprehension.

I feel learning is a lifelong endeavor and am happy to be a part of each student's path to enjoying learning.

I have worked with students using the following textbooks:

Saxon Algebra 1, 3rd edition

Saxon Pre-Algebra, 3rd edition

Saxon Course 1, 2, and 3

EnVision Algebra 1

Reveal Math Course 3

Integrated Math 1 & 2

Big Ideas Math

I Ready Math

Core Connections Algebra, Course 1, Course 2

and many more.

I wanted to be a teacher since I was in first grade.

I went to the University of Minnesota as an Electrical Engineer major.

When I realized how much I still wanted to teach I discovered Montessori's teaching method and philosophy. I knew that was the true path I needed to be on.

I haven’t stopped helping students capture the thrill of learning and achievement.

I always find it most beneficial to talk with a student to review their likes and dislikes about the material. I also go over their work samples with them. I walk them through problems to observe where their misconceptions manifest and where they have trouble spots in their comprehension. My manner and demeanor is relaxed, supportive and nonjudgmental.

I have worked with a wide range of students.

Students who stuggle with Learning Differences.

Students who stuggle with math anxiety.

Students who hate math.

Students who need to improve their math skills.

Students who have fallen behind and need to catch up.

Students who homeschool.

Work with someone who enjoys spending time with you.

Work with someone who really listens to your concerns and whose answers go beyond having you do sets of problems.

Work with some one who answers your questions in a way you understand.

Work with someone who believes in you.

A current student, reached out for help with Honors Algebra, in 8th grade, after receiving her first F on a test. She is currently attending school in Long Beach, CA. I have been tutoring with her through her entire High School Honors classes. She has received all grades of A and she is starting her Senior year. I will be tutoring her through AP Calculus AB this coming school year.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Are you willing to work hard to expand your understanding of math?

Are you willing to do your best and work together with your tutor?

Do you want to improve vital math skills?

Are you ready to believe that you can improve?

Are you willing to focus and do your best, understanding that your best is trying hard during each session?

Are you willing to give the tutor the chance to make you believe math can be a challenge but also fun?

Are you willing to work at least as hard as your tutor?
