About Karen
Mathematics learning is a building process. It is important for me to identify a student's academic weakness(es). Any skill/content area that a student has not quite mastered may affect his/her future progress. As a student improves in these areas, his/her academic success should improve as well. I am FL Department of Education teacher certified grades 6-12. Also, I have a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education.
I love to share my excitement and enthusiasm for mathematics while teaching/tutoring. I especially love witnessing when students experience that magic moment when they finally understand a challenging concept or skill. I do my best to motivate and encourage students to work to their potential. I stress the importance of good study habits and practice.
I was greatly influenced by amazing mathematics teachers in junior high school and high school. My passion for mathematics developed more and more each year. When I graduated from high school, I knew that teaching mathematics was going to be my life's career.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics Education. My educator experience spans over 40 years and ranges from grade 6 to early college.

I introduce myself and talk a little about my educator experience. I request the student to share some academic information about his/her self, as well as what's most troubling with his current mathematics class.
My teaching/tutoring experience has been with on-pace students, dropout prevention/at risk students, and special needs students. I taught in traditional classroom settings, individualized instruction programs, and college level remedial classes.
I stress to my students that we each have talent in certain subject areas and weakness in others. I encourage my students to stay positive, not give up, and study/practice each day, even if it's just for a short time. Their hard work and determination will result in ongoing academic improvement.
Two related recent events were attending a former high school student's 4-year college graduation and then her Master's Degree college graduation. This young lady was my student as a junior and senior. When she entered my class initially, mathematics was far from her favorite class. By graduation, she had developed a great fondness and appreciation toward the discipline.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students can review practice assignments, homework, and class assessments to help identify specific areas of mathematics strengths and weaknesses. Together we can build on the strengths and improve on the weaknesses.
