About James
I am a keen amateur mountaineer and fell-walker. Mont Blanc (4810m, France/Italy), Elbrus (5642m, Russia), Cayambe (5790m, Ecuador) and Mera Peak (Central) (6461m, Nepal) are my highest successful summits. More frequently, I go walking in the uplands of England, Wales and Scotland, and have been known to do multi-day, long-distance routes. I volunteer with the local Scout District (for which I have been DBS checked), particularly to help out with fell-walking and mountaineering activities. Helping people understand navigation, weather, safety, and choices of equipment and clothing are particularly rewarding for me. I enjoy seeing people realise that they can do things they assumed they couldn't. During July, August and September 2023 I lived in a Buddhist monastery in Nepal, teaching English to young monks. As well as teaching two classes of teenagers, I was invited to teach the head of the monastery - Rinpoche - who at the time was an 8-year-old boy. In earlier times I played bass guitar in a semi-professional band, our main achievements being three outings on vinyl and national radio airplay. Nowadays I play the 6-string guitar (badly). Writing computer software is a hobby of mine. I've been writing software on and off for over forty years, and in all that time I have only spent three weeks being paid as a programmer.
Recent successes in online Maths tutoring include:
Cambridge vet med candidate. Got a B in Maths first time. Was offered a place conditional on getting an A* on re-sit. I worked with her for 7 months. She got her A*!
GCSE Maths candidate. Forecast a 4. Needed a 5 to qualify for A-level. I worked with him for a year leading up to his GCSEs. He got a 6.

I have been teaching adults online and in person for over 20 years - it's how I have earned my living. More recently I have taught my younger son and his friends Maths at GCSE and A-Level. My son went from "I'm no good at Maths" to A* in GCSE followed by A in A-Level in around three years. I am friendly, patient and flexible in my approach to teaching. Many people will say they are no good at Maths because they perceive that they aren't very good at mental arithmetic. Dirty secret - neither am I! But you can still excel at Maths because Maths isn't just "harder sums". We will explore different topics, move forward step by step, and take the time to ensure that each step is secure before we build on it. Most people don't concentrate well on the same thing for more than about 40 minutes at a time. Lessons generally won't last much longer than that, and definitely not more than 1 hour.

James is a very patient and responsible tutor. He teaches my son in higher Maths for GCSE. My son has consistently scored 4 for his Maths exam, but he managed to achieve grade 6 in his GCSE! We are over the moon, and thanks to James for all his help, patience, dedication and support.
James is an incredible and unique tutor. He tutored me for my A level maths resit and with his help I was able to move from a B grade to an A*. He not only got me to an A* standard, he made maths incredibly interesting, exciting and fun! His tutoring is student centred and he worked with me to assess my situation, diagnose issues and resolve them. His approach was tailored to exactly what I required - he would always listen very carefully and work with me to find a solution. He was brilliant at pinpointing where I was struggling and he provided insights far beyond anything I was able to learn from textbooks, videos or my previous tutor. His experience was invaluable as it meant he was able to provide a much fuller picture of the subject, providing useful information beyond the specification when I was interested. With his help I was able to properly understand the concepts in a holistic and synoptic way, instead of just memorising rules and techniques, and as such I felt extremely well prepared for my exams. Beyond this he provided great advice about exam technique and mindset which helped to tackle my exam anxiety. He is very patient and conscientious and I felt I was in very competent hands. I was incredibly lucky to work with him and I only wish he had been my tutor earlier!
James is an excellent tutor. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about maths and good at finding different ways to approach a topic and find the way that makes the most sense to you as an individual learner. I don't consider myself a STEM specialist (currently studying English at university) so many of the concepts didn't come naturally to me but James was able to find ways to express ideas in different terms that were very useful to me. He is also great at offering specific feedback, which helped me to achieve high grades in both my GCSE and A level Maths exams (9 at GCSE, A at A level).
James was so helpful with tutoring me for GCSE maths. He was so supportive, patient and kind in the way he taught me. He would go out his way to explain things to me and after the session set me tasks to complete that he would then look over and mark. Fully recommend him.
