About Haruka

Meet Haruka – Founder of Nihongo Know
Your Japanese language teacher, cultural guide, and partner in your learning journey.

I am the founder and director of Nihongo Know, an independent Japanese language school dedicated to helping students develop real Japanese communication skills and a deeper understanding of Japan.

My teaching philosophy goes beyond textbooks and grammar. I want my students to understand how Japanese works in real life, why people express themselves in certain ways, and how language connects to Japanese culture and history.

★About Nihongo Know
・Small-group classes are among our most popular programs.
・Classes are intentionally kept small to provide a more personal learning experience.
・Limited spots are available. Please contact me to check current availability.

★Haruka's Professional Background
・Graduated from a national university in Japan with a teaching license.
・Over 10 years of Japanese language teaching experience.
・Former group class instructor at Vancouver Japanese Language School and Burnaby Japanese Language School.
・Previous experience as a Japanese manager at an English language academy.
・Extensive experience teaching students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

★What Makes Haruka's Teaching Different?
1. A Deep Understanding of Japanese Language and Regional Culture

I have lived in Tokyo for approximately 10 years and Osaka for over 10 years.

My mother comes from a small island in southern Japan, while my father is from a mountainous region.

Growing up with these different cultural backgrounds has given me a unique perspective on Japanese language, including Standard Japanese, Osaka dialect, regional expressions, and the cultural differences behind the way people communicate.

I don't just teach you what Japanese means. I also explain why people say things the way they do.

2. A Teacher with a Different Perspective

My experiences outside the classroom have shaped the way I teach.

Spent a year traveling around Japan by bicycle and hitchhiking.
Completed a 1,200 km walking pilgrimage through Shikoku, Japan.
Spent over a decade exploring different parts of the world.
Gained professional working experience in different countries.
These experiences have taught me to appreciate different perspectives, communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, and understand the importance of culture in language learning.

I hope to be more than just your Japanese teacher. I want to be someone who encourages you, supports your goals, and helps you discover new perspectives through learning Japanese.

3. Why I Teach Japanese

There are several reasons why I love teaching.

Sharing Japanese History and Culture: Traveling around Japan made me curious about the deeper stories behind Japanese traditions, language, and everyday life. I love sharing these discoveries with my students.
Preserving Cultural Heritage: I have come to realize how easily local cultures, traditions, and ways of life can disappear. I want to help preserve and share the richness of Japanese culture.
Encouraging Others: Seeing students grow in confidence and achieve something they once thought was difficult is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Building Connections: One of the best things about teaching is the relationships I build with my students. Many become good friends, and I truly value those connections.
4. Japanese Teaching Is My Profession, Not a Side Job

I am a professional Japanese educator, fully committed to my teaching career.

I continuously develop my own teaching materials, create learning resources, and explore better ways to help students understand and use Japanese.

At Nihongo Know, I aim to provide structured lessons, personalized guidance, and practical learning methods that help students make consistent progress.

Teaching Japanese is not something I do as a hobby. It is my profession and something I genuinely love.

5. My Promise to My Students

My ultimate goal is not to make you dependent on a teacher forever.

I want to help you become an independent Japanese learner who knows how to continue improving, exploring, and enjoying the language on your own.

With the right guidance, learning methods, and consistent practice, you can build the confidence to use Japanese in real-life situations.

Whether you're learning Japanese for travel, work, personal interest, or the JLPT, I want to help you enjoy the journey and reach your own goals.

Let's make your Japanese learning journey meaningful, exciting, and fun!

If you have a genuine interest in Japanese, I'd love to hear from you.

See you in class!

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I developed an interest in teaching both English and Japanese from a young age, growing up in different areas in Japan and being exposed to different languages and cultures in my twenties. This fascination with communication and cultural exchange led me to pursue a teaching career after graduating from a National University in Japan to become a teacher. My interest was further solidified during my extensive travels and experiences abroad, where I witnessed the power of language in connecting people from diverse backgrounds.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

What makes me passionate about teaching Japanese is the opportunity to share not only the language but also the rich history, culture, nuances of Japan with others and, most importantly, our life time ! Language is more than just words; it's a gateway to understanding different perspectives and forging meaningful connections. Seeing my students grow and succeed in their language journey fuels my passion even more, knowing that I'm contributing to their personal and professional development. This is why my students keep coming back to see me even if they graduate ! I am their mentor :)
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Tutoring allows me to personalize the learning experience for each student, catering to their unique needs and learning styles. What I love about tutoring is the direct impact I can have on my students' progress and confidence in using the Japanese language. As a "Superprof," I am committed to going above and beyond for my students, providing not only quality lessons but also ongoing support, guidance, and motivation to help them achieve their goals.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

One of my role models in teaching is the mother of Albert Einstein. Her dedication to nurturing her son's intellectual curiosity and providing him with a stimulating environment for learning has always inspired me. Despite facing numerous challenges, she recognized and cultivated Einstein's potential, emphasizing the importance of creativity, exploration, and critical thinking in education. Her unwavering support and belief in her son's abilities paved the way for his groundbreaking contributions to science. Her example reminds me of the profound impact a nurturing and supportive mentor can have on a student's journey, fueling my commitment to fostering a similar environment for my own students.
  • What are your keys to success?

There is no laughing in your class now? Yes, that' not a class. My students are so excited to have a class every single week because our classes are full of fun learning and laughing ! I will say the keys to my success as a Japanese teacher lie in continuous learning, adaptability, empathy, and dedication. I am committed to staying updated on the latest teaching methodologies and resources to provide the most effective learning experience for my students.
Being empathetic to my students' challenges and needs allows me to tailor my approach accordingly and create a positive and nurturing learning environment. Above all, my dedication to my students' growth and success drives me to constantly strive for excellence in my teaching practice. Yes, I was born to become a teacher !
