About Ian
My name is Ian Surman and I have been practicing yoga since 2018. I study under a skilled and compassionate yoga teacher named Tony Parra. I continue to learn deeper aspects of yoga, philosophy, and psychology from my teacher and will earn my 200hr teaching degree in the next couple months . Before meeting my yoga teacher, I studied with a western buddhist practitioner and various QiCong teachers. My first experiences in Meditation were at the Won Buddhist temple in Chapel Hill, NC under Reverend WonSong.
I maintain healthy boundaries and relationships with all my students and hope to empower their practice as much as I empower my own. I always consider my student's best interests and design my classes to suit their needs. May Yoga Practice Find You!

I have years of experience practicing yoga (Mantram, Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, and Dhyāna). Lessons will always begin with the recitation of a taught mantra and include new or reoccurring Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, and Dhyāna Depending on the personal needs of the student , we will both consider fundamental truths of psychology, philosophy, and our own life experiences to help refocus one's attention back to the path or one's personal goals . It is my hope that these lessons will be a time for students to care for themselves and to gain valuable skillsets that help one approach anything in life. Texts used during this course of study will be the haṭhayogapradīpikā and the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali. For dedicated students, I will share meditation techniques referenced in other texts.
It is my hope that these lessons are affordable, worthwhile, and ultimately meaningful in helping one develop a spiritual path based on the ancient principles of yoga laid out by the Ancient Rishis of India.
