About Mojgan
I am a full time teacher of Mathematics with over 33 years of experience. I was the Head of Mathematics for 21 years, The Senior Director of Studies between 2008 to 2021, Designated Safeguarding Lead between 2010 and 2016 and NQT Manager (from September 2012 to 2021). In addition to my teaching I am now a University Admissions Tutor, processing UCAS applications and advising Year 13 students on their university and degree choices, something that I have done for the past 8 years as a Director of Studies.
I joined DLD College in September in 1988 as a sessional tutor. The average grade improvement of my students (above 2 grades and up to 5 grades for some students), including a one term retake A level group, resulted in a full time and permanent contract shortly after. I soon developed a reputation for being a funny, firm but a fair teacher, qualities that my ex-students talk of when they write to me. A student who is currently at LSE wrote to me last term to say that she was motivated by my teaching because of “your exceptional capability in explaining all the nitty gritty and linking the concepts even before we ask another question. Your teaching was flawless now that I think about it, and I guess this also comes with experience”. My students know that they have no choice but to work like A-grade students and that ‘not understanding’ is not an option when they are in my class. I do strongly believe that attitude to learning and confidence in one’s ability are keys to learning and doing well. Over the years I have also developed an awareness and understanding of a wide variety of SEND needs, working with the SEND department to ensure that my approach and teaching strategies are suited to the needs of my students.
It is important to me to be able to shape my students’ attitude to the subject and to learning in general. I have worked with GCSE retake students in the past (100% pass rate for November retakes) as well as average and bright students both at GCSE and A levels and have learned how to reach students at different levels. Teaching A level Statistics became one of my specialties and, in the years that A level Statistics existed, some of my students were recognised as the top 5 performing students by the exam board.
As the Head of Mathematics between 1997 and 2018, I recruited, worked with and managed Mathematics teachers and together we produced some of the best results for the College year on year. The average percentage of A*to B grades at A levels in the last 5 years in my role as the Head of Mathematics was about 76% (DLD is a non-selective college.)
I enrolled for my Masters in Business Administration on a part time basis while working full time at DLD; I wanted to train in a discipline that was new to me. Apart from learning the course content I learned how to write well and work under pressure, juggling work and study deadlines. My students’ results continued to remain amongst the highest during that period. I do believe that my own motivation to get through my tasks had a positive effect on my students who were aware I was studying in the evenings. That year, a newspaper feature on one of my students who had improved her grade from U to B in one term proved good marketing for the college.
I believe that people are best managed through support, guidance, frank conversations and positive criticism. They need to see examples of best practice to be able to raise their own performance and set their own bar higher. I have led and managed staff by communicating regularly and frankly and I can claim that I have maintained a very good relationship with people whom I have worked closely with.
I have also been College’s NQT manager from 2012 and have attended training by Istip regularly. I have successfully guided and supported a number of teachers as well as their Induction Tutors; I do enjoy mentoring young and less experienced teachers. The most recent Istip inspection in February 2017 was very successful, mentioning my enthusiasm for the process “lovely to see” and my “complete attention to detail” making the inspector’s job “straight forward”. I have regularly attended Istip training course for NQT managers.
I have been using OneNote while delivering my online lessons through Canvas and Microsoft Teams. I use SIMS, College’s database, and I use MyConcern as a safeguarding tool for recording well-being concerns. I have become experienced delivering online lessons during lockdown.
In my role as the Safeguarding Lead (2010 to 2016) I have attended multi agency Child Protection Conference and have liaised directly with the social services. I have had to update the College’s Safeguarding Policy and write annual reports for the Board of Governors.
I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate dated November 2020.
In June 2020 I successfully completed The Anatomy: Foundational Coaching Course by Graydin.
As Director of Studies I have been the main point of contact for academic and pastoral matters relating to students for many years and I am therefore skilled in dealing with parents, guardians and external agencies.
I am fluent in Persian and interested in Music.
