About Indrek
I am a woodworker, teacher and lifelong student of traditional crafts. My academic background in history has strengthened my interest in traditional techniques, technologies and ways of making, while my other vocational education besides woodworking in forestry and nature guiding has given me a close relationship with forest and natural materials.
I live and work on my own small farm in Estonia, where I manage a forest and have my own woodworking workshop. I particularly enjoy understanding wood as a living material with an origin, rather than simply as something bought from a timber merchant. I sometimes gather my own craft materials from the forest — not only timber, but also branches, roots, withies and other natural materials traditionally used in rural woodworking.
I have experience teaching woodworking as a vocational teacher and as a regular guest lecturer at a university. I especially enjoy working with students who are genuinely curious and motivated to understand the craft rather than simply produce an object.
Ideally, I would like my students to experience woodworking as a complete journey. For example, we might start with a future stool or chair by selecting and harvesting suitable material from the forest, then splitting it, learning about drying, and observing what the material can offer us. Later we could design the piece, prepare rough blanks and gradually transform them into the finished object. Several projects could develop simultaneously, allowing us to work while other materials are drying or other pieces are being completed.
Of course, this is not always practical, and many projects will begin with already seasoned wood. But whenever possible, I want the finished object to carry a story: where its material came from, how it was prepared, what traditional knowledge shaped it, and what the student discovered while making it.
For me, the finished stool, basket, household object or simple folk instrument is not the main goal. It is a tangible record of the learning journey — almost like a personal graduation piece. What matters most is everything contained within it: practical skills, knowledge of materials and nature, understanding of traditions, patience, judgment, discoveries and a deeper relationship with making.

Learn traditional woodworking online, your way and with suitable pace.
My lessons focus on traditional hand tool woodworking and your own progress as a craftsperson, rather than simply providing a fun woodworking experience. We start with your interests, previous experience and goals, and build a personalized learning plan around them during the first free meeting.
Drawing on my background in rural woodworking, classical joinery, lutherie (string instrument making), history and forestry, I can cover topics ranging from general woodworking, wood and the forest as its natural environment, gathering and preparing your own material, rural and folk woodworking traditions, classical joinery and furniture making, as well as the construction of simple traditional string instruments.
The first free meeting lasts 30–45 minutes. Lessons themselves last 1–2 hours, depending on your preference, and may combine discussion, demonstrations, practical guidance, drawings, photographs, short presentations and so on. Where useful, I can prepare or suggest additional research, reading materials or exercises before the lesson.
You do not need an extensive workshop to begin. I generally encourage students to develop a basic set of quality hand tools, but we can choose techniques that require very little equipment at first.
My aim is to help serious and curious students understand not only how a technique is done, but also why it was developed and how it relates to materials, tools, traditions and craftsmanship.

Founding Student Pricing
My lesson prices will gradually increase as my online teaching practice develops. However, once you become my student, the price you start with is the price you keep.
In other words, the rate that applies when you book your first lesson will remain your personal rate for as long as you continue studying with me.
So the earlier you start, the lower your personal rate will remain. I want to give my first online students a lasting benefit for taking a chance on a new online woodworking teacher, for helping me develop and for becoming part of this journey.
