About Katherine
I have spent a significant amount of time with young children through babysitting, working as a religious school assistant, and tutoring. I love kids; I love seeing their eyes light up when they understand a concept, and I love looking at the world through their unfiltered viewpoint. For three years in high school I volunteered as a mentor for a brother and sister who were struggling academically. While they were capable and intelligent, I knew that motivation, structure, and a plan were the tools they needed for success. I recognize how different students have different learning styles, so I spent this time figuring out their strengths and how to best guide them in their studies. I helped them with all subjects, and then taught them how to best manage their work for when I left for college. When I first started seeing them, their grades were in the seventies. Soon, they climbed to the eighties and eventually high nineties upon helping them become a cooperative team that formed trust and confidence in working together. I truly cared for them and they became part of the family, and would stay after their session for dinner or just to play.
I am currently a sophomore at Williams College majoring in Economics and Psychology. I am studying and have independently researched cognitive and social psychology, where I learned techniques in which students can be most efficient in retaining material, and how to combat procrastination.

Because the student is in a vulnerable position and brave enough to seek help, it is important to have the right attitude in approaching tutoring. I would be personable and show them that I am excited to be working with them in order for them to feel comfortable and let me instill confidence in their academic abilities and my own. First, I would introduce myself and say my educational background and what I like to do outside of school. After an introductory conversation, I would then find out about the areas troubling them, ask if they could pinpoint what is their biggest barrier in understanding the material so that I can know where to start. If they are in late-middle school or high school, I would ask them what kind of learner they are, and in what way does material resonate with them most in order for me to piece together what would be most efficient in helping them. If they are younger or do not know their learning style, I will help them figure that out. I would figure out if the student is seeking enrichment or if they are struggling with their academics.
Once this is all established, we can dive into their problem areas and tackle what they're having trouble with. What comes next depends on the length of the session and the amount of times the student wishes to meet in the future, and what they’d like to get out of their time. If they are looking for a 15 minute session to complete their homework, I would ask them to explain to me how far they've gotten, where they got stuck, and what their train of thought is to answer the question. I would then provide assistance by guiding them through each part of the question, having leading questions so they stay engaged, and explain where I got the intuition from and how to apply it. If the student is looking for consistent tutoring or mentoring, I would help them establish study guides and really get to know the student’s strength in order to form a concrete plan for the both of us going forward, and provide supplementary questions if they would like.
