About Georgina
I am a PhD student in the Norwich Medical School (worked and studied at UEA for seven years), who is currently writing my final dissertation for this degree. I have a true passion for biology, and discovered this during my own GCSE and A-Level experience. I enjoy learning and teaching others about biology at all levels. I also have a lot of laboratory experience, and feel confident I can explain processes in a way which makes them relatable and understandable to students.
My PhD has a focus on a parasite, one which infects your gut and causes young children to become unwell across the world, because of this I have a lot of experience in diseases and how the human body responds to invasion.
I also hold a Distinction in Masters by Research in Clinical Science, which taught me about medical statistics, and approaches to medical research. My First Class Bachelor's degree is in Biological Sciences (from the University of Kent). Here, I learned broadly about biology, from human biology to plant biology with some ecology thrown in for good measure.
While I am developing my tutoring experience, I do have experience facilitating the learning and development of students at the UEA medical school. These students are either in their first or second year of the MMBS course. Here I help students understand what they don't know, so they become equipped with the tools they need to solve complex problems. I use their yearly learning objectives to guide them to resources and ensure they learn content relevant to the course. We also develop creative methods to communicate and understand that knowledge. I have also taught undergraduate and other PhD students about science, and have presented my research at numerous conferences to a range of audiences. I have also taught many students laboratory techniques over the seven years at UEA.

Approach to tutoring:
I use an exploratory approach to learning, encouraging the student to ask questions and explore topics at a deeper level if interested in the topic. I work with the student to focus on core areas they lack confidence in, as well as work on critical thinking skills to understand complex problems and break them down into manageable chunks. I enjoy problem solving, and am happy to work with the student to explain biology in new and interesting ways (A good diagram always helps).
Also happy to explain experiments/laboratory practical sessions to develop the student's understanding.
Experience in Teaching :
Lessons can last one hour, but am happy to adjust depending on needs and requirements the student feels they need.
I have experience facilitating Problem Based Learning seminars at UEA for medical students. These sessions focus on student-led learning. Students first brainstorm a case with little prior knowledge, ask questions they think could help them understand and diagnose a patient. This approach enables students to understand what they don't know, and figure out what questions they need to ask to develop that knowledge. This develops critical and reflective thinking which will help not only in biology, but in all subjects and careers which require problem solving.
My Education:
As part of my PhD (writing thesis currently), I have presented my work at conferences (internal and externally) and have experience with laboratory research. I am specialised in Parasite Biology, using molecular, cellular and sequencing methods to answer biological questions.
Target Audience:
Lessons are for GCSE and A-level students, but I am happy to tutor secondary school aged children to develop biology interest and build a solid foundation for further studies.
Also happy to tutor undergraduate biology students to help students understand complex topics at this level.
