About James
I’m Ashley, the artist behind JamesWildeXO and LA Weekly’s 2017 Street Artist of the Year. I’m a bubbly, easy-going working artist who genuinely loves helping people get excited about making art. I’d be happy working with children, teens, or adults—from someone picking up a pencil for the first time to someone who already creates and wants help finding their own voice.
My work often combines characters, geometry, bold color, texture and layers as a way of turning emotions, memories and ideas into something visual. That same sense of exploration shapes how I teach. Rather than deciding what I think you should make, I like to start with what you are interested in learning or creating, teach the fundamentals that will help you get there, and then encourage you to interpret them in your own way.
While I completed some college, most of my artistic education has come through years of hands-on experience as a working artist. I’ve received awards for my work, created commissioned pieces for Brookfield Properties across multiple locations, as well as LA LIVE (AEG), Fox Studios and worked on projects with cities throughout California, and created personal commissions for collectors and people who connected with my art.
I believe in learning the foundations—drawing, shape, composition, color, texture, balance and materials—without losing the fun or individuality that made you want to create in the first place. There isn’t one “right” artistic voice. My job is to help you build the skills and confidence to discover yours.

My lessons focus on helping you learn the foundations of drawing, shape, proportion, composition and visual storytelling while developing your own way of seeing. I’m less interested in teaching someone to perfectly copy a still life and more interested in helping you understand what you’re looking at, then translate it through your own perspective, imagination and style.
We can work from photographs, objects, people, environments, ideas or completely imagined scenes. I’ll teach you the technical basics that make an image work, but I also want you to feel comfortable changing, exaggerating, simplifying or reinterpreting what you see.
Every student has a different visual language, so I tailor lessons around your interests, goals and skill level. Whether you’re a complete beginner, getting back into art, or trying to develop a more recognizable style, the goal is to give you a strong foundation without teaching the creativity out of you.
As JamesWildeXO, I’ve built my own work around personal interpretation, experimentation and finding a distinctive visual voice. I want students to leave with stronger technical skills, but also with more confidence in trusting their own creative instincts.

One of the things I like to offer is a complimentary 30-minute planning session so we can get acquainted and make your lesson feel personalized before we dive in. We can use that time to talk through what you’re interested in learning, the kind of art you’re drawn to, your experience level, materials you already have, and any specific project or skill you’d like to explore. It gives me a chance to plan ahead so our actual lesson time can be spent creating rather than figuring everything out once we begin. If you’re nearby, we can even meet in person, or we can easily connect through FaceTime or Zoom.
My listed rate is the base rate for the first hour of instruction, and lessons can be tailored depending on your goals, location, group size, materials, and the amount of preparation involved. If you’d like worksheets, reference images, creative prompts, take-home exercises, or optional homework that I can review with you at a future lesson, I’m happy to incorporate that as well.
I often recommend sessions longer than an hour for students who want to work on a project. Having a little extra time allows us to brainstorm, free draw, experiment, talk through ideas, and then really get into creating without watching the clock. The first hour is at my standard rate, with a lower hourly rate available for additional consecutive hours.
I welcome children, teens, and adults at all experience levels, and I’m also happy to work with small groups. I like to begin with what you want to learn and build from there—teaching the foundations while helping you develop your own style and creative voice rather than giving everyone the same project.
You’re always welcome to use your own supplies, and I’m happy to recommend materials ahead of time, including affordable options and places to find them. If you’d rather have me provide materials for a particular project, I can arrange that for an additional materials fee based on the medium and what we’re creating. I often bring a few basic extras just in case, but communicating beforehand helps me make sure we have what we actually need.
Travel costs can vary depending on distance, travel time, and any required paid parking, and I’ll always communicate those details beforehand. Specialty materials, unusually involved prep, or other custom requests can also be discussed in advance so there are no surprises.
Above all, I want lessons to feel easy-going, encouraging, creative, and genuinely fun. If there’s something you’re curious about that I haven’t mentioned, please ask—I love finding ways to shape a lesson around the individual student.
