About Jocelyn
I am a violin tutor with 9 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Violin alongside specialist training in the Alexander Technique and the Taubman Method — two of the most effective approaches to addressing the physical problems that violin playing can cause. I have helped over 330 students and I have a particular reputation for being able to solve technical problems that have resisted other teachers' attempts at correction, which I attribute to my approach of addressing the underlying foundational cause rather than only the surface symptom. Several students have come to me after developing playing-related injuries and I have helped them both address the physical symptoms and correct the underlying technical causes. My violin teaching is specifically focused on technique repair — the process of identifying and correcting established technical problems in students who have been playing for some time — and I have developed a systematic and patient methodology for doing this that preserves musical progress while addressing underlying technical issues. I begin technique assessment with video analysis — recording the student from multiple angles and reviewing the footage together — because many technical problems are invisible to the player and only become apparent when seen from outside. My diagnostic framework separates technical problems into categories — structural related to posture and instrument hold, dynamic related to movement patterns and tension, and acoustic related to sound production — because each category requires different corrective approaches. Tension is the most common and most damaging technical problem in intermediate violinists, and my approach to tension release is somatic rather than mechanical — I help students develop awareness of where they hold unnecessary tension and cultivate the sensory experience of release, because trying to correct tension by imposing new positions typically creates new tensions. Bow arm problems — collapsed wrist, elbow leading excessively, insufficient pronation, over-pronation — are addressed with very specific corrective exercises that isolate and rebuild each element of the bow arm movement separately before reintegrating. Left hand frame problems are treated similarly with isolation and rebuilding exercises at slow tempo. I work with students on the psychological dimension of technique repair — the frustration and self-doubt that come with feeling worse before feeling better during the correction process — as a necessary component of sustained engagement. Technique repair is conducted alongside repertoire so that students continue making musical progress while their technique is being rebuilt. My teaching goal is a student who plays without pain, without tension, and without the technical limitations that have been holding them back.
