About Hanako
I'm a viola and piano student at the Royal Academy of Music with 18 years experience on each instrument. I have experience as a practice assistant for all levels from beginner to professional, and adult piano students I have worked with have gone on to achieve ABRSM Grade 8 whilst building their confidence as a musician. I'm also knowledgeable about tutoring music theory having achieved ABRSM Grade 8 myself, before pursuing harmony-based electives at my university.
I have extensive experience performing; as a violist I was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 2015-2017 and regularly perform as part of the Royal Academy of Music symphony orchestra. I've been playing in string quartets since the age of 10 and have participated in several international chamber music festivals, including the Hawaii International Chamber Music Festival and the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival.
As a pianist, I enjoy giving regular solo recitals both in person and online. I was a part of the Meran Academy's Beethoven Festival in late 2020, playing two Beethoven sonatas as part of a celebration for the great composer's 250th birthday.

I'm a violist and pianist currently studying the Bachelor of Music programme at the Royal Academy of Music. I teach beginner to late intermediate viola and piano students online, and also provide music theory tuition.
Lessons are clearly structured, though I will of course tailor them to your individual needs as a student. Usually, I begin with a review of technical principles (such as scales, technical exercises) and moving onto repertoire. I will support you in your beginning stages of learning a piece and give advice as to the best ways to practice, and once you're nearing completion, I will help you use your imagination and creativity to take your playing to the next level. All my lessons end with a look back over the lesson to summarise what we've covered, address any questions you may have and set clear goals for next time.
I've worked with many teachers from many different pedagogical schools, and my personal teaching draws inspiration from all of them. My fundamental principles include developing a strong technical foundation to both facilitate realisation of musical goals and to promote health and wellbeing as a player, using your ears and imagination to guide your sound, developing a secure basis in the understanding of music theory so you can confidently approach any piece of music on your own and make informed interpretive choices, and most of all building a studio filled with kindness, trust, and love and enjoyment of playing our instruments.
