About Francis
I attended New College Oxford and the London School of Economics as a mature student both full time and part time. Firstly taking a BA Hons at Oxford, 1983 and secondly an MPhil at the London School of Economics in 1987. I was in my early thirties when I procured a lecturing post at Kingston College of Further Education in 1981. I stayed there for 18 years teaching A-level Social Sciences, Economics, Politics and Sociology – this in addition to teaching teachers on the Further Adult Education Teaching Certificate. I have more than 20 years' experience in teaching students from the 16-19 age range almost exclusively A-level Economics with an occasional IB Economics. And I still do this today. My other activities include writing articles on geopolitics and economics for the more obscure websites; it keeps me sharp. Apart from this I am married and take my little dog for a walk in the park every morning, she keeps me fit. That’s about it really. In terms of my teaching methodology I can help students with any conceptual difficulties they might be experiencing in the subject, and the approach to answering longer essay-type questions. I work methodically through the syllabus in chronological order in what I endeavour to be an interactive process. The tutorials are an hour long and I am not going to simply talk or dictate notes for an hour. This unfortunately does happen with some teachers. In addition, I would challenge, and encourage students to challenge, the received wisdom of the textbooks. Economics is not a branch of mathematics or physics - although there are some who believe it is - and there are a number of schools of thought and theories which constantly clash. Economic theories are not right or wrong, they are simply fashionable or unfashionable. Economics is as much about values as about facts. And this can be sometimes difficult to get across, as spoon-feeding has become commonplace in our education system.
