About Michael

I am pursuing my M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at University of Southern California (USC), where I previously graduated with my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with summa cum laude honors. I am reliable, dedicated, and patient, committed to providing the best learning experience for students, having previously served as a peer tutor for the on-campus engineering tutoring platform at USC, where I tutored undergraduate engineering courses.

Fun Fact: I completed a dual degree during my undergraduate, finishing my B.M. in Piano Performance! In addition to my engineering background, I am a classically trained pianist, and I also give private piano lessons. More details about my piano background can be shared if interested!

My underlying goal as a tutor is to meet students where they are based on their level and build upon their foundation. Mathematics and STEM-related topics can be a challenging subject matter, and I hope to make the tutoring sessions as understandable and as enjoyable as possible. I believe learning is best achieved when the tutor is able to constantly adapt to different students and being open-minded to finding new approaches to teach.

What makes my own tutoring unique is my rigorous training as an engineering student and my diverse background, which has influenced my approach to being flexible and patient when working with others. One of my goals as a tutor is to build a strong connection with the student, and help the student to trust their learning process, by helping to empower the student to take ownership of their learning.

In terms of the my own tutoring, I strongly believe in creating small goals for the student to track progress and feel confidence in their ability. I utilize these goals as a way to track and guide the student’s learning process.

Lesson plans vary based on the level of the student and/or any immediate support needed. A trial lesson will involve understanding some of the goals of the tutoring and what the needs are from the student. I strongly believe in tailoring lesson plans for each student, but a typical 1-hr lesson plan might involve:

Immediate Questions / Review (10min)
Brief Discussion of New Topics (10min)
Relationship to Big Ideas (5min)
Homework/Practice Problems (30min)
Final Check / Last Questions (5min)

I have also received 5s on AP Exams including AP Calculus BC, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics C Mechanics and can help with exam preparation. Accepting students of all levels for tutoring in math, algebra, precalculus/calculus, physics, and/or other engineering topics
