I am a University of Melbourne graduate, holding a bachelor's in Biomedicine, majoring in microbiology and immunology, minoring in Genetics, and a Master's in Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I have experience teaching from primary to college level students in sciences and mathematics, and English,

About the lesson

I like to teach by providing examples, real-life or relatable analogies, or similar scenarios or questions. I believe in the different types of learning styles, and can mold my lessons to fit the student's learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). I can also help with exam prep (general exam strategies, types of questions, things that will give you marks, time management), along with hundreds of sample exam questions (up to Year 12 only)! I understand that mathematics can be especially difficult to understand for students, and therefore patient, willing to explain multiple times in different ways, and in an easy-to-remember and understand fashion. When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Teaching has always been a hobby of mine, I was the top of the class throughout secondary school and most of Year 11 and 12, so my teachers would let me do as I pleased as I was usually the first to finish any assignment or worksheet given. I would use that time to wander around the class and help my teacher answer my classmates' questions!
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Maths and the three sciences were always my favourite subjects, and I enjoy teaching and talking about them! Even now, I like to look up interesting/unique facts within math (recreational math) and the sciences, so that I could include bits of trivia when teaching, hoping that it will make my lessons more interesting and engaging.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
I was blessed with amazing teachers throughout my life - even now, I look up to them as role models. My secondary school maths teacher, science teacher, IT teacher, and all my year 11 and year 12 math and science teachers, were all amazing. I try to incorporate parts of their teaching style into my own.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Communication, kindness, understanding. I believe these three qualities are even more important than knowledge. Even if we had the knowledge, without being able to pass it on, it will soon disappear.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Back in school, I would help my teacher and tutor answer my classmates questions! I also remembering attending the same tutor with a group of classmates, and ended being the one teaching them!
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?
Catching up with a changing syllabus is quite challenging, especially in these subjects as a lot has changed. I am always keeping up to date my keeping a collection of textbooks and worksheets to use as resources!
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
My passion is in the sciences, research, and education!
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?
I strive to be the type of tutor, where my students can answer that question on my behalf!
