About Emily
Hello, I’m Emily — a professional tutor with a PhD in English Literature and over a decade of experience supporting students in higher education. I’ve taught undergraduate courses at university level, including lectures and seminars, and have worked extensively one-to-one with students on their essays, dissertations, and research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. I continue to tutor university students, helping them develop and refine their work — from essay planning and argument structure to theoretical engagement and academic writing style. My approach is thoughtful, methodical, and tailored to the needs of each student. My teaching and research background spans twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature, with a particular focus on science fiction, speculative fiction, and film. I also have extensive experience teaching and working with continental philosophy, feminist thought, and gender theory, and regularly support students who are engaging with thinkers such as Foucault, Butler, Derrida, and Deleuze. Whether you're looking for help clarifying complex theoretical ideas, developing a critical argument, or structuring a long-form piece of writing, I aim to provide clear, focused guidance and a supportive, intellectually rigorous space to grow in confidence and skill.

My lessons are designed to support undergraduate and postgraduate students studying English Literature — particularly those working with twentieth and twenty-first century literature, critical theory, or continental philosophy. I take a methodical, student-led approach to teaching, helping you break down complex content into manageable parts. Whether you're grappling with dense theoretical texts or planning a dissertation, I’ll work with you step-by-step to develop clarity in both your thinking and your writing. A key focus of my lessons is helping students build strong, coherent arguments. We’ll look closely at how to plan and structure essays, organise your ideas effectively, and ensure each paragraph contributes to a clear, persuasive thesis. I also support students in developing their own critical voice — so they can move beyond description and into confident, original analysis. I can help with: Argument structure and essay planning Engaging with theorists like Foucault, Butler, Derrida, Deleuze and others - Close reading and integrating theory with text - Dissertations and long-form research projects - Academic writing, editing, and responding to feedback Every session is tailored to your goals, pace, and academic background. My aim is to create a focused, encouraging environment where you can approach difficult material with greater confidence and come away with clear, actionable progress.
