About Talya
My name is Talya Firestein and I am 18 years old. I am currently a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in statistics. As an individual who is beyond passionate about math and its applications, I am excited to share that enthusiasm with you. As a student myself, I understand the challenges that come with navigating through and mastering certain mathematical concepts. With that being said, I will be there to support you every step of the way. Throughout my high school career, I have taken various mathematics courses and have volunteered as a mathematics tutor to aid those who need it. I have taken courses ranging from traditional Algebra 1 to college level Precalculus and statistics. I have maintained a grade of 95+ in every one of these courses while enjoying them thoroughly. Further, I have performed more than 50 hours of math tutoring in-person where I was able to work one-on-one with students ranging in age. Math can become an overwhelming subject, but I am committed to your success as a student. With patience, practice, and a clear understanding of the concepts and their logic, we will overcome any challenge. Let's work together to make math a subject you feel confident about, whether it's for your next test or for a deeper understanding of the material.

My goal as a tutor is to help students develop a strong mathematical foundation, build problem-solving skills, and increase their confidence. Whether they're learning new concepts or preparing for an exam, I aim to make math more understandable and enjoyable, and to empower students to succeed both in and outside the classroom.
My tutoring lessons are ideal for elementary, middle school, and high school students, as well as anyone looking to strengthen their skills up to the level of Precalculus and introductory Statistics.
A lesson plan of mine is often as follows:
1. Warm-up for the first 5 - 10 minutes where me and the student cover practice problems and a quick discussion about a topic that the student finds challenging
2. Introduction of New Material - We will cover the foundation and logic behind the new material to ensure the student understands the material
3. We work through multiple practice problems together. I will encourage the students to solve them individually and asks for clarifications when needed. I will often provide guidance as I avoid giving direct answers. We will cover a range of problem types to ensure the student gets a full spectrum of practice.
4. Wrap-up & Reflection (5 minutes): We will summarize the material we covered in the session, with the student explaining the main concepts in their own words to ensure there is a solid understanding. We also review any lingering questions and set goals for the next session.
5. Homework/Practice Assignments: If I find it necessary, or if the parent / legal guardian requests some, I will assign a few practice problems for the student to work on after the lesson to ensure they can master lessons outside of the tutoring session.
