About James
Hello, I'm James, a modern (and medieval) languages student at Oxford, studying French and Russian.
Learning new languages is my passion- currently, I'm in Estonia to practice my Russian and also to learn Estonian! Therefore, I have lots of respect for anyone who wants to receive tutoring for French, because, for me, it is so worthwhile to invest time in modern foreign languages. Since I'm always learning new languages myself, I have not forgotten how difficult and frustrating it can be, which I think helps me to be particularly patient and understanding when students are struggling.
I hope to make students feel engaged during my lessons, so they can become more passionate about learning French as enjoyment is a really important part when it comes to language-learning. I'm willing to go the extra mile by sending documents or links to videos that I feel would be helpful for students, and by replying to questions that they may have outside of lesson times.

For all ages, and for qualifications up to and including A level French, as well as MLAT French aptitude test and language aptitude (LAT) test.
Tailoring teaching approaches to individuals is the most important for me since language acquisition happens in a variety of different ways. Exposure to French language in as many contexts as possible is an excellent way to learn, so I will try to conduct lessons in French as far as possible- of course, while making various adjustments based on the student's ability.
Asking the student where they feel least confident in French is a great place to start. From there, I will encourage them to try and form as many French phrases/sentences as possible through the use of prompts- this will allow me to search out new possible areas of study.
I am used to doing hour long lessons, but I'm happy to do longer or shorter ones too.
At GCSEs, I received all grade 9s (including French). I received all A*s for my A levels (Biology, Chemistry, French and Latin).
So far, the main tutoring work I have done was for a university student with a passion for French (though not studying it), with weekly lessons over a six month period. Apart from this, I have given lessons to a sixth form student in preparation for the UKLO (UK linguistics Olympiad).
