I believe in firmly grasping the concepts first and making sure that they understand it before moving on to applying it via questions! Preferably I go through the foundation topics first (first few chapters) to ensure that they have a good foundation to use for the rest of the more advanced chapters! I couple this with a lot of application and testing that they can apply the concept properly under any circumstance or question!
I also believe in active recall and remembering the concepts from understanding it, rather than hardcore memorisation.
