About Alison

I am a recent college graduate! I have been tutoring English the past few years for K-12, ESL, and college level writing. For K-12, I spent years working for different public institutions to help increase their reading comprehension and pronunciation. For ESL students, I have created language conversation groups at local community colleges and universities, to improve their spoken abilities. Additionally, I worked extensively with these students and can translate concepts to both Mandarin and Cantonese if needed. Finally, at the collegiate level, students come to me with a variety of writing samples from English, history, social science, and humanities courses. Every student I worked with increased their scores by one or two letter grades, and they have come back to inform me of their success. Other types of writing tutoring I excel at, is providing assistance with college personal statements. My tutoring has gotten students into top colleges, such as U.C. Berkeley.

For job seekers, I provide vast assistance on resumes and cover letters, and any piece of writing sample that may be required. Any type of writing at the collegiate level or the beginner level, I can elevate and improve.

About the lesson

As an English tutor, my goal would be to create a comfortable interactive environment for students. This is critical to successful learning, because if students are uncomfortable making mistakes or asking questions, it is difficult to gauge their strengths and tailor their learning. While working as a K-5 Reading Buddy for the community library’s summer reading program, my buddies would read no louder than a whisper. Though I tried my best to encourage them, one-on-one interaction intimidated them to such a great degree. Therefore, in my next position at my K-8 day-camp, I gathered five kids and we all took turns reading at story time. This time, I acted out words with funny voices or faces, making them laugh and smile. As a result, they gained confidence in their speaking abilities, no matter how well they felt they performed. In my approach, each student needs to feel comfortable and safe, to ensure the best learning experience possible.
