About Sunjay
I graduated with my undergraduate degree from UCLA and an MBA from UCI.
Before I began this professional path, I was a lifelong learner. I spent a long time as a math tutor, starting in my high school days but continued to hone my skills. I have taken math all the way into the highest levels of calculus.
I've been helping students from elementary through college level.
I believe every student already has the ability to understand but may lack the structure to process. I want to help my students understand the right structure for them.
My job is to help them find their natural rhythm, slow down enough to clarify what works for them, and empower them to learn the why, not just repeat what didn't land the first time.
I teach the way I wish someone had taught it to me: by making the logic visible, not just the steps. When you understand why a method works, you stop depending on memorizing it.

Teaching Approach:
I start by listening. Before I explain anything, I want to understand where the confusion actually is, because the problem a student thinks they have and the problem they actually have are often different things.
From there I don't lecture. I ask questions that let the student arrive at the answer themselves. That builds real understanding, not just familiarity with a procedure. I also keep sessions low-pressure. I'd rather go slow and have something click than move fast and leave gaps behind.
A typical lesson:
1. Check in: What happened since last time? Any homework, tests, or moments of confusion worth unpacking first.
2. Find the gap: I ask the student to walk me through a problem in their own words. This shows me exactly where their understanding breaks down — not where they think it does.
3. Build from there: We work through the concept together using questions more than explanations. I guide, they arrive. We do this with real problems, not abstract theory.
4. Try it alone: The student works through a similar problem independently while I watch. This is where I see what actually landed.
5. Close with clarity: What did we cover? What's worth practicing before next time? Clear, specific, doable.
What sets me apart:
I'm patient without being passive. I think slowing down is how you can truly understand and bring clarity to where the problems lie in understanding. This has been my practice professionally across the breadth of my experience. I try to find the angle that makes it finally make sense. I'll push a student to think harder, but never in a way that makes them feel stupid for not knowing yet.
Who the lessons are for?
Elementary through high school students. Strong in arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus.
Also open to teaching writing, reading comprehension, and various other subjects as needed.
