About Brendan

I am a student at the University of Chicago with a verified 1540 SAT score (790 Math, 750 English). I've published heart regeneration research at Weill Cornell Medicine, co-founded the Web Development Club at my school, co-founded a gamified SAT preparation platform, co-founded a newsletter volunteer/research opportunity organization (7000+ subscribers), and created a museum exhibit on WWII at the US Merchant Marine Academy Museum.

With that profile, I can help shape a personal narrative for the college admissions process and teach you how to scale your extracurriculars to have meaningful impact.

I combine academic rigor with innovative learning strategies. I offer comprehensive SAT tutoring, college admissions counseling, and essay review to help students replicate my success and gain admission to their dream schools.

My Teaching Method and Techniques
My approach is grounded in the belief that standardized tests are about strategy and pattern recognition.

Holistic Strategy: Because I scored in the top percentile for both Math (790) and English (750), I teach a balanced approach. I teach the formulas, grammar rules, and secret strategies that make the SAT easy.

Admissions-Focused Mindset: For my counseling and essay review students, I move beyond simple editing. I focus on narrative building—crafting a cohesive story that aligns with what top-tier universities like UChicago look for (intellectual curiosity, unique perspective, and authentic voice).

Adaptive Pacing: I treat every student differently. Whether we are drilling advanced algebra or refining a Common App personal statement, I adapt my explanation style to match the student's learning language.

A Typical Lesson Plan [but varies greatly depending on the student]
Every session is structured to maximize active learning and minimize wasted time.

The "Temperature Check" (5 mins): We review homework or recent practice sections to identify specific weak points (e.g., "Heart of Algebra" or "Command of Evidence").

Concept Deep Dive (20–25 mins): We break down a specific topic. For math, this might be tackling complex geometry problems; for English, it might be deconstructing rhetoric.

Guided Practice (20 mins): The student solves problems live while I observe their workflow. I correct meaningful errors in real-time, teaching them to catch their own mistakes.

The Closing Loop (10 mins): We summarize the key takeaways and set targeted goals/homework for the next session.

Note for Essay Reviews: The structure shifts to brainstorming, drafting, and line-by-line feedback sessions focused on voice and clarity.
