Find out more about Shivam

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I first developed an interest in computer science because of my strong passion for mathematics. I was drawn to the logical structure and problem-solving aspects of math, which naturally led me to explore programming. What began as learning basic coding gradually evolved into a deeper fascination with how algorithms can model intelligence and solve real-world problems.

Over the years, this interest grew into a professional career as a full-time software engineer specializing in machine learning. My long-term goal is to build intelligent robotic systems that can seamlessly interact with humans using advanced machine learning and programming techniques. This vision continues to drive my growth and commitment to the field.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

What makes me passionate about my subject is the power of breaking down complex problems into smaller, manageable pieces. There is something incredibly satisfying about decomposing a large challenge into logical components, solving each part systematically, and then seeing how those solutions come together to address the bigger problem. That structured way of thinking is at the heart of computer science and AI.

With artificial intelligence becoming central to so many aspects of modern life, I am especially motivated to help others understand and use it effectively. I want people to harness AI and programming to their fullest potential—not just as abstract concepts, but as practical tools that can simplify tasks, improve efficiency, and ultimately make everyday life easier.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

What I enjoy most about tutoring is that teaching deepens my own understanding. When you explain a concept clearly to someone else, you are forced to organize your thoughts, simplify complex ideas, and truly master the material. It becomes a shared journey where both the student and the tutor grow together. As my students gain confidence and clarity, I continue refining my expertise and communication skills.

What makes me a “Superprof” is my proven teaching excellence at the University of British Columbia, where I received a teaching award for my contributions to university-level courses. The positive feedback from students and formal recognition of my teaching reflect my ability to explain complex topics effectively, support learners at different levels, and create an engaging, results-driven learning experience.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

One of my biggest role models is Grant Sanderson, the creator of the 3Blue1Brown YouTube channel. His approach to teaching mathematics through clear, intuitive visualizations completely changed the way I think about explaining complex ideas.

He demonstrates that learning should be curiosity-driven, not memorization-driven. By using visual animations to build intuition, he makes abstract concepts feel natural and engaging. His work inspires me to incorporate clarity, storytelling, and visual thinking into my own teaching, especially when explaining challenging topics in programming, machine learning, and mathematics.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success are consistency, curiosity, and disciplined problem-solving. I believe that steady, focused effort over time is far more powerful than short bursts of motivation. Showing up every day, even when concepts feel challenging, builds true mastery.

Curiosity is equally important. I constantly ask “why” and “how” to deepen my understanding rather than just accepting surface-level answers. Finally, breaking complex problems into smaller, manageable steps allows me to tackle ambitious goals with clarity and confidence. This mindset has helped me grow both as an engineer and as an educator.
