About Cam

I am currently a mature Maths student. When I learned maths at school, the teaching method put me off as Maths seemed out of reach for someone else. Since then, I have concluded that Maths is not difficult, having worked through more advanced topics. To me, Maths is a language. To learn the language we need to work at it and more importantly understand the underlying concept and even more importantly the WHY, as without context it is very difficult to get motivated.

My approach to tutoring is to take a subject at a time and work through an example or set of examples. Then my students attempt examples together to explore any issues or gaps in knowledge. Typically a lesson lasts for an hour.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in tutoring many years ago while at school. I used to teach saxophone and clarinet; my students were generally quite successful. Since then, I have done a couple of degrees and been teaching some of my friends' kids maths. I really like it when my students grasp topics that were once very challenging for them. Anyone can learn maths (and other subjects) as long as they know the core concepts.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I like to teach all subjects in maths. My particular favourite topics are Calculus and Algebra, as I find it quite relaxing to solve equations and understand what the results mean.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role model is Pavel Grenfled, as he was one of the first teachers I came across online https://lem.ma. He makes teaching look easy and slowly goes through more advanced subjects, such as linear algebra. He helps his students visualise what the maths means, so it is not a memory exercise but an understanding exercise, with concepts that are hard to forget.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, good communication, and making the topic fun and engaging. I get my students to do the maths themselves, I then step through the solution, because maths is a participation sport rather than a passive reading exercise.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Making mistakes is the foundation of learning. I particularly remember working through Khan Academy exercises and almost getting each exercise wrong on a particular day. The key thing I did was to be persistent and understand where I went wrong. This helped me learn key concepts. I always try to teach my students that mistakes are a positive thing; without this, you cannot understand very easily.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

I am currently in the second half of my second year at the Open University. I still find some topics challenging, but I use the tried-and-tested method of having a go. If I make a mistake, I understand why and learn from it.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is learning and imparting this knowledge to my students in a consumable way.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I lead by example and show the human side of learning. My students report that they enjoy my teaching methods, as they are fully engaged in each session and leave knowing a little bit more. I listen to my students to find out what they want to learn in each session, so I can make sure they are getting help in the areas they most need.
