About Melanie
I am a professional classical musician (oboist), graduate of the famous Paris Conservatoire and Salzburg Mozarteum, member of a world-renowned symphony orchestra and an international competition prize-winner. I however always had a fascination for traditional music and in the winter of 2017 discovered the beguiling sound of the Northumbrian Smallpipes.
I immediately bought a second-hand set of pipes and taught myself to play. At the time, I was living in Austria where I didn't have access to any teachers!
Since then I've taken part in masterclasses given by Andy May, Pauline Cato and Andrew Davison, received tuition from Chris Ormston, and won prizes at the Bellingham Show and Northumbrian Pipers’ Society competitions. In July of this year, I will be performing a solo set at the opening concert of the Interceltic Folk Festival in Hofheim, Germany.
In 2023 I became a trustee of the Northumbrian Pipers’ Society.

I am able to offer lessons and support for students of any age, who are new to the Northumbrian Smallpipes.
Please note: I do not teach the Great Highland Bagpipes or Scottish Smallpipes!
I can help you with basic technique (including tuning drones), reading and learning tunes, tips on memorisation, sight-reading skills, tips on how to improve practise, as well as basic reed adjustment.
I can also help you prepare for upcoming performances or competitions, particularly in novice and beginner categories.
I am currently based in the EU, so primarily teach online, however I visit the UK several times a year, so a meeting in person is certainly not out of the question :)
When in the UK, I am usually in the Surrey/London area, and occasionally also in the NE.
