About Mike
Hello! I am an ESL / English teacher originally from New Hampshire but now living and working in Washington DC doing software development and project management. I LOVE languages and love learning the nuances and patterns that exist in different language families. I am near-fluent in Spanish and am continuing to learn French. I also studied Icelandic while abroad in Iceland! I also love geography, traveling, history, games of all types, philosophy and film.

I am TEFL-certified and have been tutoring students one-on-one for about a year. My teaching philosophy is that you learn best when you're engaged in something that you're really fascinated with, so we will work together to structure lessons around your interests. I tend to be very organized and will take detailed notes on any issues with pronunciation, grammar or new vocabulary and will share these notes with you to review on your own. In your first lesson, we'll do an assessment to get an idea of what level you are at and what kinds of things I think you need to work on. I'll also ask you about your specific goals and any problem areas. After that, lessons will be designed around your specific goals and needs. I like to structure lessons around topics that you're really interested in and I like to make them fun and interactive by bringing in articles, pictures and videos. You as the student will decide how you want to approach learning English. This can vary from casual conversation practice to structured grammar, reading or speaking lessons. If you're working on test preparation, we can do that as well.
