About Maura
Hello there! My name is Mrs. Bernstein and I am a teacher, tutor, and tennis coach living in Owings Mills, Maryland. I am professional and punctual and excited to meet you! I have experience with many different levels of content as well as exciting and relevant materials. Although I love going "by the book," I am able to go on tangents that could help us further understand the work we're doing or just help us connect more as tutor and student.

My approach is to first start with some sort of diagnostic assignment to assess the skill level of whatever standards and skills are prescriptively set by the organization I work for. Focusing on specific literary concepts and elements like plot structure and figurative language, can help a student improve their creative writing or analysis about a piece of writing. Additionally, I am well-versed in teaching students how to write an essay with a scaffolded progression that chunks the material easily for the student. I am familiar with remediation, acceleration, and on grade level instruction and can create and implement any of these when needed. I am most experienced in grades 6-11 and have personally taught a few GT and Honors classes in these grade levels. I am a firm believer in materials being entertaining but relevant, student choice, and uplifting multiple and varied voices in literature and academia. I have experience with IEPs 504s and Behavior Intervention plans which makes me uniquely qualified to modify, make adjustments, and offer accommodations to any student.
