About Jessica
I am an experienced teacher. Over the past 15 years, I have taught students in Kindergarten to 8th grade and everything in between. I earned my masters degree in 2021 and am licensed as a teacher and reading specialist. I have also done one year of LETRS training and am going to do the second half next year. LETRS is a nationally recognized training program and stands for Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling. In addition to tutoring, I am currently a middle school reading specialist in Kansas.

Reading is a critical skill that affects all areas of our everyday lives. I work with students from Kindergarten through Middle School to improve their reading skills. I always start with a baseline assessment that includes phonics, word and passage reading, and comprehension. Then I plan a course of instruction to meet those needs. A typical lesson begins by introducing and practicing a phonics skill. Then the skill is applied in sentences and passages. Lastly, I provide opportunities to write and spell the word in different contexts, such as in a word list or sentence. I also teach morphology, or how word parts work together, to improve vocabulary and comprehension.
