About Emily

Hi, my name is Emily and I offer tutoring in English Language or English Literature. I have always loved these subjects for the scope and freedom they offer to study what you’re passionate about. Saying that studying English is just studying books is hugely reductive – English is history, and philosophy, and politics, and geography and a hundred other subjects all rolled into one. Not only can studying English develop your intellectual ability, but also other equally important skills such as curiosity, empathy and confidence which are vital for any direction you choose to go in life.

This freedom and intersectionality between subjects can also make English tricky. That is why I’m here! I will help you to think about texts from your own perspective and write about them in an expressive, sophisticated way, which will impress examiners but more importantly inspire you. I will pay particular attention to the ability to close read a text, to learn about the context and to develop an argument regarding the overall themes. Learning how to write confidently and respond to feedback are also important skills which I will help you to develop.

I am reliable, enthusiastic about my subject and eager to share that love with others. If you think I sound like the tutor for you, I’d love to chat about how we can work together to improve your skill and enjoyment of English!

I always begin my lessons by asking the student what they think their strengths and weaknesses are. This means the student can express what they want to focus on, allowing me to tailor the remainder of their lessons to the individual. More importantly however, I ask the student what they most enjoy about English and how they like to learn; I think enjoyment is key to successful teaching and I want my tutoring sessions to feel challenging but interesting. I want students to enjoy their lessons as they learn, promoting engagement and progress.

I plan my lessons using the GCSE mark schemes which offer a helpful guide to each question and the way in which it needs to be answered. I will work with students to demystify these (often wordy) guidelines and provide stock phrases, tips and practice questions to help them hit the right marking points.

In the past I have worked with a range of resources such as games, creative writing, photographs, video clips, mind maps, charades, example essays and word clouds; any resources I do utilise in lessons will be chosen or guided by my student. I find these creative ways of learning more effective and more memorable. I track the progress of students throughout our lessons by answering practice questions, marking them, providing feedback and then repeating the task several lessons later.

My classroom is a safe, inclusive, non-judgmental space where all students are welcome and where all will be given personalised support and feedback.
