About Iris
Hi! My name is Iris. I'm currently 18 years old and going into university this coming autumn.
I have experience tutoring GCSE Maths, French, and English Language/Literature as well as AS Computing. Having gone through the reformed GCSE system myself and achieved an 8 (A*, for those unfamiliar with the new system), as well as studying Maths and Further Maths at A-Level, I feel confident in the skills that I have developed when it comes to maths. I want to be able to help any students out there struggling with the content - especially in our COVID world, where teaching is sometimes a little more complicated, I know students may benefit from some one-one-one or small group time.

My lessons are aimed at pupils in years 10 and 11 that are working towards their GCSEs (ages 14-16). I am happy to take students that are using any exam board as long as I am informed at least two weeks prior to the first lesson what the exam board is and what the texts they study are. These lessons would typically be 30 minutes to an hour, involve three basic steps:
1) LEARNING the methods and skills that you need to answer questions successfully.
- In GCSE English, this would involve: how to structure your paragraphs, how to accurately pick out supporting quotes from given texts, and any necessary terminology surrounding text analysis.
- In GCSE Maths, this would involve: understanding formulae and various mathematical concepts.
This allows us to create a solid base that, as a student, you can always fall back on, which will underpin the rest of the learning process.
2) APPLYING the methods and skills learned in Step (1).
- In GCSE English, this would involve: analysing the set texts from your exam board and understanding the themes, settings, characters, and historical context explored in them, becoming comfortable with new texts, and honing your vocabulary and sentence structure in order to produce concise, effective analysis or quality creative writing pieces.
- In GCSE Maths, this would involve: working through questions on a topic until the student feels comfortable answering them.
This part of the learning process is to allow the student to develop confidence in their abilities and skills. Repetitive action like this is what allowed me to be comfortable with analysing on the fly, which is something that is vital for the English Language paper, and something I want to pass on.
3) TESTING your application skills. In both English and Mathematics, past or sample exam papers, and answering questions posed by me verbally, potentially in timed conditions. In order to not interfere with school, my standard is to not set any homework - however, if I believe the student would benefit from doing more practice outside of lesson time, I will be happy to set essay-style questions for them to do between lessons, which I will mark and send back with any commentary. Particulars on this can be discussed further.
