One of the first lessons I learned being a tutor was learning to speak languages. Everyone learns differently, and understands on individual paths. Learning to speak a person's individual learning curve is essential to fully helping the person learn the material. First my lessons start with asking what they want to know, and why they have difficulty understanding it. Then we talk about what they do understand. After I find a way to merge those two together, they almost always start understanding the material. My lessons are for K-12 is math, science, english and history. I also help college level math and science.
