I approach tutoring by focusing on understanding concepts instead of memorizing steps. In AP Chemistry especially, I try to connect topics together so students can see the “why” behind reactions, equations, and problem-solving methods. I adapt my teaching style based on the student’s learning preferences, whether they learn best through visuals, practice problems, real-world examples, or guided explanations.
My teaching methods include:
* Breaking difficult concepts into smaller, manageable parts
* Using diagrams, analogies, and step-by-step walkthroughs
* Practicing AP-style multiple choice and FRQ questions
* Teaching problem-solving strategies instead of just giving answers
* Reviewing mistakes carefully to build confidence and identify patterns
A typical lesson usually starts with a quick review of previous material and identifying any confusing topics. Then we work through a focused lesson on a specific concept, such as equilibrium, acids and bases, thermodynamics, or molecular geometry. After learning the concept, we practice problems together and gradually move toward independent work so the student can apply the material on their own. I also like incorporating test-taking tips and AP exam strategies throughout sessions.
What sets me apart as a tutor is that I recently completed AP Chemistry myself and understand which topics students struggle with most and how overwhelming the course can feel. Because of this, I explain concepts in a way that feels approachable and student-friendly rather than overly technical. I’m also very patient and encouraging, and I focus on helping students build confidence alongside content knowledge.
