About Christophe

In-person lessons offered! (Silver Lake, Echo Park, East Hollywood, Hollywood, North Hollywood or similar nearby neighborhoods preferred). I also offer a free online 30 minute assessment for new students to see if we’re a good fit.

Guitar is difficult. If it weren’t, everyone would be able to play it. But it’s incredibly fulfilling to finally be able to play a song that brings you joy. I’m here to help you experience that.

One of the biggest bits of wisdom I ever received at music school was to remember that any song, no matter how difficult, can be learned as long as you break it up into pieces. Approach it slowly, bit by bit, and you can learn anything.

After playing for 23 years, I’ve learned a ton about the guitar. I specialize in Rock, Funk, Pop and Blues on electric and acoustic guitar. I can also help you play difficult finger style songs from folk to classical.

For beginners, I believe learning songs that drive you while dissecting the underlying theory is the best method for keeping students motivated while appreciating what makes the song “tick”. That way you learn a little bit more music theory with every song.

For moderate to advanced players, I think memorizing the fretboard using the CAGED method is essential for guitar proficiency. From there, technique and lessons vary per whatever genre you’re trying to learn.

I’d love to know your goals! There is no one-size-fits-all option. A lesson plan should vary with the individual.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

It started when I was 12 years old when my grandmother, affectionately known as "MeeMaw", unexpectedly bought me a guitar for Christmas. My first guitar teacher introduced me to a ton of music that went on to be the foundation of my playing and style.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Radiohead. Unbelievable combination of originality and musical mastery.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

One with concrete daily, weekly, and monthly goals that guarantee development, complete with exercises, learning and dissecting songs. But there has to be balance: rest and time away from the instrument is important for motivation and growth. Take some time to watch and listen to your favorite artists that made you want to pick up and instrument in the first place.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

They all have their challenges, but I'd put guitar up there. It's not the most difficult instrument to start on, but true mastery can take a lifetime of practice. And you'll never be able to master every style.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

You have to love it. If you love it, practice doesn't feel like a chore, it feels like a necessity. Plan. Have a checklist of things you want to improve on and do it. Finally record yourself. You will pick up on mistakes that you would have missed otherwise.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Trey Anastasio. This guy lives and breathes creativity. Would love to pick his brain about how he writes his compositions. I know he trained with a composer early in his career.

Thom Yorke. One of my favorite songwriters. Would love to hear more about his creative process and his collaboration with Jonny Greenwood.

Brittany Howard. I just think we'd get along. Such a powerhouse vocalist and original songwriter. She's surrounded herself with lots of amazing musicians and I'd love to hear what she's learned spending time with them.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

It's not a competition. Comparing yourself to others will only bring misery. The only competition you should worry about is against yourself.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

All the information you ever need to play guitar is already available for free online. So why can't everyone play? It boils down to motivation. I'm good at breaking down difficult concepts, maintaining focus and encouraging you when things get difficult. Remember: music is a language, and all languages take time to learn.
