About Andrew

In college, I completed a liberal studies degree strengthening my knowledge of literature, writing and psychology. In my first graduate program I studied grammar, linguistics, syntax and exegesis while learning Koine Greek and Ancient Hebrew. I also researched and wrote on textual criticism and high level hermeneutics in a broad range of genres including poetry, history, epistle and law. Additionally, I learned how to analyze literary and stylistic elements in film and literature. In my second graduate program I learned and applied pedagogy for teaching English language arts to Middle and High School students. In my third graduate degree I have been able to hone my writing and research skills while specializing in philology, semantics and syntax in the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Literature.

For the past six years I have put my education into practice as a substitute teacher in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia and Grandview. I have taught in almost every subject and every grade between kindergarten and 12th grade in diverse schools.

I have 6 years of experience teaching middle school and high school students at every level from SPED to AP. I tutored for a year at the beginning of COVID and students I taught gained at least two grade levels in math and reading.

I can teach writing, literature, and history to anyone from Middle School to graduate level.
I teach math through Algebra 2.

My teaching methodology is centered around personalized, student-focused learning. I believe in tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs and learning styles of each student I work with. To achieve this, I emphasize active engagement through discussions, interactive tools like digital whiteboards, and real-world application of concepts through projects and case studies. I encourage questions, critical thinking, and problem-solving, empowering students to grasp complex concepts and develop a deep understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, I provide regular feedback and assessments to track progress and ensure mastery of the material. My approach is not only about imparting knowledge but also nurturing independent learners who can apply what they've learned in real-life scenarios.

Sample Lesson Plan: Thesis Statements

Grade Level: Middle School (6th - 8th grade)

Duration: 60 minutes

Objective: By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to craft a clear and concise thesis statement for an essay or research paper.

Introduction (5 minutes):
Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of a thesis statement. Explain that a thesis statement is the foundation of an essay; it serves as the main point or argument that the writer will support throughout the paper.
Share a simple definition: "A thesis statement is a one summary of the main point or argument of an essay."

Activity 1: Understanding the Components of a Thesis Statement (15 minutes):
Write the following formula on the board: Topic + Opinion/Argument = Thesis Statement.
Break down each component:
Topic: What the essay is about.
Opinion/Argument: The writer's stance or perspective on the topic.
Show a few examples of thesis statements and ask the student to identify the topic and the opinion/argument in each one. Discuss the differences between weak and strong thesis statements.
Censorship in the media raises questions about freedom of speech and its impact on society
Listening to different types of music can significantly affect one's mood and emotions
Volunteering not only benefits others but also helps middle schoolers develop empathy and a sense of purpose
Advertisements significantly change our preferences and thus it is crucial to become a discerning viewer

Activity 2: Analyzing a Sample Essay (15 minutes):
Provide the student with a sample essay or article that contains a thesis statement.
Ask the student to read the essay and underline the thesis statement.
Afterward, discuss with the student what makes the thesis statement effective. What is the topic, and what is the writer's opinion or argument?

Activity 3: Crafting a Thesis Statement (20 minutes):
Present the student with a broad essay topic (e.g., "The impact of technology on society").
Together, brainstorm possible opinions or arguments related to the topic. Write these ideas on the online whiteboard.
Encourage the student to choose one opinion or argument that they are most passionate about.
Using the chosen opinion/argument and topic, guide the student in crafting a thesis statement. Write at least four drafts and refine it until it is clear, specific, and arguable.

Conclusion (5 minutes):
Summarize the main points of the lesson: the components of a thesis statement, analyzing sample essays, and crafting a strong thesis statement.
Emphasize the importance of practice and revision in improving writing skills.

Homework Assignment (optional):
Assign the student to write an introductory paragraph for an essay, incorporating the thesis statement they developed in class. Encourage them to focus on hooking the reader and smoothly introducing their topic and thesis.
