Find out more about Evan

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first developed a deep interest in the sciences during the IB Diploma Programme, where I studied Maths AA HL, Chemistry HL, and Biology HL. I found joy not just in understanding the content but in explaining it to my classmates in simpler terms. That naturally grew into tutoring—initially helping friends and peers, then working more formally with students. My interest in tutoring strengthened during medical school, where I saw how much structured support and targeted explanations can make a difference in someone’s confidence and academic results.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise in IB Maths AA, Biology, and Chemistry—at both SL and HL levels. I also support students with their Internal Assessments and final exam preparation. In Chemistry, I particularly enjoy teaching organic reaction mechanisms and spectroscopy, as these often intimidate students but can become second nature with the right approach. In Maths, I like working on calculus and function analysis. Biology is a favourite of mine for its real-world applications, especially in human physiology and molecular biology. The only thing I enjoy a little less is when syllabus memorisation is prioritised over true understanding—so I always aim to bring the content to life.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, one of my chemistry teachers during the IB really shaped how I see learning and teaching. She made complex concepts feel logical and always had time to explain things in different ways. She didn’t just teach for the exams—she taught us to think critically, which is something I aim to bring into every lesson with my students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs patience, clarity, and the ability to adapt to each student’s learning style. It’s not just about knowing the subject—it’s about communicating it in a way that connects. Understanding the student’s mindset, breaking down complex ideas, and building their confidence step by step are key. I also think good tutors constantly reflect and adjust how they teach based on what’s working.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my IB students, started out struggling with the basics of IB Maths AA. He had scored only 20 out of 120 on a practice exam. After consistent work together—focusing on exam technique, breaking down concepts, and working through feedback—he nearly aced Section A of his next paper. Seeing that kind of turnaround was incredibly rewarding and reinforced my belief in how powerful targeted tutoring can be. During my own IB Diploma Programme, I experienced a major academic turnaround that still shapes how I tutor today. In the early weeks of IB Chemistry, I sat my first test on stoichiometry and scored a 4. It was frustrating, especially since the concepts felt overwhelming at the time. But I committed to improving—revisiting fundamentals, practising consistently, and asking for help when I needed it. By the end of the year, I had earned a 7 on the SL syllabus and discovered a real passion for Chemistry. I even chose to move up to HL, and ultimately achieved a 7 in Chemistry HL. That experience taught me that growth is always possible with the right strategy and support, and I use that story to motivate my own students and guide them through their own turnarounds.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

During the IB, one of my biggest challenges was dealing with time pressure—especially in Maths AA and Chemistry HL, where even knowing the content isn’t enough unless you can apply it quickly and accurately. That experience helps me now as a tutor: I put a strong emphasis on exam timing, marking criteria, and practising under pressure, so my students are well-prepared for the real thing.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Beyond my passion for teaching, I love football and cooking—they’re my ways to relax and recharge. But when it comes to tutoring, I really enjoy seeing students have “aha” moments—especially when something they’ve been struggling with suddenly clicks. That’s what drives me to keep improving as a tutor.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

What makes me a Superprof is my ability to combine subject expertise, exam insight, and empathy. With over 500 hours of tutoring experience, I know how to help students reach their goals—not just academically, but in terms of confidence and motivation too. Whether it's getting an IB 7, improving IA structure, or preparing for med school interviews, I always tailor my approach and bring full commitment to every session.
