Alex and I spent the better part of the last two years together, weekly. I first was recommended to Alex through a friend of mine who was also learning Portuguese and I decided to pursue him as a professor. We started with simple lessons with slides that Alex had made to teach me basic words and phrases. Then I asked if Alex would be willing to teach me more advanced concepts through a textbook (Samba!) which was great. Each class we’d go through a few pages of a chapter, do a lesson, and he’d assign me some homework to reinforce my learning. During that time I developed grammar in past present and future tenses. I learned to read, write, speak and understand spoken Portuguese. He mixed in lessons about Brazilian culture so that I could prepare for a trip to Brazil and intermingle with my wife and her family. He taught me lots of do’s and don’ts that saved my butt many times. His experience studying and living in the US was helpful in juxtaposing the two cultures, so I could better understand Brazil. Any time I wanted to focus on a specific area or topic he would craft a lesson for us to practice. He is very patient, kind, and understanding. After these past two years I have improved drastically. I can understand, speak, and navigate Brazilian Portuguese. I owe Alex a lot and highly recommend him as a professor to any English speaker looking to learn Portuguese.

I first met Alex on the soccer field. I quickly realized that he is a great soccer player and a friendly person. After befriending him, I learned that he was teaching Portuguese at our local University. He communicates and teaches excellently in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. We both are teachers. According to our conversations, I noticed that Alex uses instructional strategies that are highly engaging. Alex is a great teacher and I can guarantee that based on where I am right now. I remember when we first met, he was still studying to be a teacher and was doing a college project at my school. Once a week the project took place in the afternoon and was the best part of my routine. In this project I started to have more appreciation about literature, writing, learning, such as I followed a career as a Journalist and now I'm almost graduating and I'm already a reporter. All this because Alex was a great teacher back there, not only for his teaching skills, but also for his passion for teaching.

Alex is much more than just a teacher. He is always ready to talk to you and to think in a different way to teach and to help you. During his classes, the students feel comfortable and able to try to speak, not only to learn English Language but also to better communicate in their mother tongue. Alex always seems to be prepared to work in different ways, reaching new goals and showing that the students can get great results. He never tries to hide the problems and difficulties that people may find on the way while learning a second language, which makes him a trustworthy person.
