About Andy
-I first went to Japan in my early-twenties, studying Japanese every morning and teaching English every evening. I found that you can learn to speak Japanese surprisingly quickly and easily (honest!), and can still remember the excitement I felt when I realised I was having a conversation in Japanese, and not just reading from a phrasebook. I'd love to help you to have this experience too. -I've read dozens of novels in Japanese, I read the news in Japanese every morning, and enjoy reading books on Japanese culture and history. Compared to speaking, reading Japanese IS hard, and I can't pretend it isn’t. But if you’re interested in giving it a try, I hope I can inspire you to see that it is both possible and extremely rewarding. -I passed the JLPT N1 on my first attempt, less than two-and-a-half years after learning my first words of Japanese; I have a BA(2:1) in Japanese from SOAS; and was a finalist in the Japanese Government's Agency for Cultural Affairs' international excellence in translation competition both times I entered. -I've spent most of my working life at Japanese companies, and have lots of experience in using the Japanese language in real-life situations.

*I can help all ages and abilities in reading, writing and speaking Japanese. *I like to teach for 60 minutes at a time. *I can provide written feedback, a summary of points covered, study tips, and suggestions on areas to focus on. *I use a visualiser and whiteboard to demonstrate how to write Japanese (I'm a kanji geek!). *I make a point of reinforcing previously-learned grammar and vocabulary by using it across lessons. *My experience passing the JLPT N1 and as a translator helps me to understand the challenges English speakers face, and allows me to explain subtle nuances in native English.

In my years working with Andy for Japan's equivalent of the BBC, NHK, i found him thoughtful of his audience and his Japanese second to none.
He has a true passion for the language, often harbouring knowledge of it that often surprised and sometimes surpassed the native reporters and correspondents we worked with.
He always enjoyed teaching others the skills that he himself went to great lengths to obtain and was always thoughtful and patient in doing so.
I'm sure anyone employing him will not be disappointed.Andy is honestly the best Japanese tutor I have ever had, he has an incredibly deep knowledge of Japanese, particularly Kanji, and was very helpful to getting me to finally understand how to learn them and all the while making them fun to understand and learn! Along with that his method of teaching grammar and vocabulary were extremely good and fun to take part in! When it comes to conversation it's great to have someone so encouraging when conversing and really helped to boost my skills and confidence which has made my conversation leaps and bounds better than it ever was
I cannot recommend him enough!View more recommendations
