About Janay
I have always wanted to teach because I enjoy helping others learn and develop their understanding. I am particularly passionate about English Literature and Sociology, and I hope to inspire students to think critically and engage with ideas in these subjects. In the future, I aim to become a university professor in either English or Sociology, and tutoring gives me the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience, share my enthusiasm for learning, and help students achieve their academic goals.

My approach to tutoring is student-centred, focusing on making lessons engaging, interactive, and tailored to each learner’s needs. I primarily teach English Literature, using techniques such as guided reading, discussion of themes and characters, analysis of language and structure, and practice with essay writing and exam-style questions. I also support students with GCSE Sociology, helping them understand key concepts, apply theories, and develop analytical skills. A typical lesson lasts 45–60 minutes, structured to include a recap of previous material, introduction of new topics, guided exercises, and a summary to reinforce learning. I encourage active participation, questioning, and discussion to build confidence and independent thinking. I have experience as a Teaching Assistant during my Year 11 work experience, where I supported students one-on-one and in small groups. This helped me develop strong communication, patience, and the ability to adapt explanations for different learners. My lessons are suitable for secondary school students preparing for GCSEs or seeking to improve their understanding in English Literature and Sociology, with the goal of building both knowledge and confidence in the subjects.
